Houses of the Holy A Higher-Critical Study of World Religions

Houses of the Holy A Higher-Critical Study of World Religions
Free Download Houses of the Holy: A Higher-Critical Study of World Religions by Robert M. Price
English | February 25, 2025 | ISBN: 1634312767, 9781634312707 | True EPUB | 364 pages | 1.9 MB
In a shrinking world in which religion has become as much a motivation for war and terror as an inspiration for saintliness and benevolence, it is more important than ever that we understand faiths other than our own. Where did they come from? How did they begin? Were their legended founders real historical individuals? How do their beliefs shape their actions? Which faiths are mutations of older ones? Many otherwise helpful introductory volumes cover only the most populous religions and, fearing most readers will shy away from going deeply into important detail, they wind up grossly oversimplifying. By contrast, Robert M. Price's Houses of the Holy fills in these blanks comprehensively and does so in clear straightforward language, without cheating the necessary complexity. Here you will find fascinating coverage of a full dozen religious faiths, including several you have likely never even heard of!

Horses, Horses, in the End the Light Remains Pure A Tale That Begins with Fukushima
Free Download Horses, Horses, in the End the Light Remains Pure: A Tale That Begins with Fukushima By Hideo Furukawa; Doug Slaymaker; Akiko Takenaka
2016 | 160 Pages | ISBN: 0231542054 | PDF | 1 MB
In the first major literary response to the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear meltdown that devastated northeast Japan in 2011, Furukawa travels back to his childhood home near Fukushima to assess the damage and reconnect with a place that is now doubly alien. His journey conjures the storied history of the region, particularly the Soma nomaoi military exercises, in which wild horses were captured and offered to a Shinto shrine. Standing in the crisp morning light, these horses also tell their stories.A fusion of fiction, history, and memoir that replicates the experience of trauma and its effect on memory in ways reminiscent of Nabokov's Speak, Memory and Sebald's The Rings of Saturn.

Home Beyond the House

Home Beyond the House
Free Download Wei Zhao, "Home Beyond the House"
English | 2022 | ISBN: 1032280158 | PDF | pages: 350 | 153.5 mb
Based on extended fieldwork conducted between 2007 and 2019, this book aims to answer a simple question: What is the meaning of home for people living in vernacular settlements in rural China? This question is particularly potent since rural China has experienced rapid and fundamental changes in the twenty-first century under the influences of national policies such as "Building a New Socialist Countryside" enacted in 2006 and "Rural Revitalization" announced in 2018. Drawing upon ethnographic fieldwork, building surveys, archival research, and over 600 photographs taken by residents along with their life stories, this book uncovers the meanings of home from rural residents' perspectives, who belong to a social group that is underrepresented in scholarship and underserved in modern China. In other words, this study empowers rural residents by giving them voice. This book links the concepts of place, home, and tradition into an overarching argument: The meaning of home rests on the ideas of tradition, including identity, consanguinity, collectivity, social relations, land ownership, and rural lifestyle.
