The Roman Municipia of Malta and Gozo The Epigraphic Evidence
Free Download George Azzopardi, "The Roman Municipia of Malta and Gozo: The Epigraphic Evidence "
English | ISBN: 1803276142 | 2023 | 155 pages | PDF | 6 MB
How did the Maltese and Gozitans fare under Roman occupation? How were they treated by their new masters? And what did they do to appease them? What changes did the new political situation bring about in their lives? How did they respond and / or adapt? Was their religious identity in any way affected? How did they manoeuvre their loyalties to their own benefits? And how did they manage their own domestic affairs within the new political set-up? Though based essentially on epigraphical evidence, this study seeks to address the above and other questions through an exercise in which epigraphy and the archaeological record supplement each other. The results shed new light on the governing bodies of the Maltese islands in Roman times and the models they followed, those who administered them, the latter's role and status, and also their relationship with and their significance for the rest of the population.

The Roman Lower Danube Frontier Innovations in Theory and Practice
Free Download Emily Hanscam, "The Roman Lower Danube Frontier: Innovations in Theory and Practice "
English | ISBN: 1803276622 | 2023 | 153 pages | PDF | 6 MB
Over the past few decades, there has been a significant amount of research on the Roman Lower Danube frontier by international teams focusing on individual forts or broader landscape survey work; collectively, this volume represents the best of this collaboration with the aim of elevating the Lower Danube within broader Roman frontier scholarship. The Lower Danube, running between Singidunum (modern Belgrade) and Halmyris in the Danube Delta, was one of the most densely fortified regions of the Roman Empire. The region has long been a border zone, today forming part of the border between Serbia and Romania, and the majority of the border between Romania and Bulgaria. Despite its importance for understanding both Roman frontier policy and the relationship between ancient and modern borderscapes, the region has not yet made its full contribution to international Roman scholarship. Bridging the theoretical divide that exists between different regional research traditions, chapters in this volume focus on sites like Ratiaria, in modern north-western Bulgaria, while other contributors examine the complex landscape from a wider perspective oriented around roads, temporary camps, or early Christian sites. The Roman Lower Danube Frontier emphasises the importance of engaging with Roman frontier landscapes, particularly in regions such as East-Central Europe, where they remain part of a contemporary borderscape.

The Roman Bridge between Dolni Vadin (Bulgaria) and Grojdibodu (Romania)
Free Download Dorel Bondoc, "The Roman Bridge between Dolni Vadin (Bulgaria) and Grojdibodu (Romania) "
English | ISBN: 1784918075 | 2018 | 116 pages | PDF | 13 MB
The Roman Bridge between Dolni Vadin (Bulgaria) and Grojdibodu (Romania) presents all the available data on the Roman bridge over the Danube which connected Dacia and Moesia at this point. The toponyms Vadin and Grojdibodu themselves mean 'ford', a crossing over water, in this case over the Danube. There have been no archaeological excavations at the feet of the bridge but the author has been able to propose positioning, scale and full reconstruction on the basis of a survey of existing remains, known road alignments, old maps and drawings as well as comparison with better-known parallels. The book also includes a catalogue of small finds deriving from the area of the bridge. This bridge has been ignored for centuries primarily due to the absence of any mention of it in ancient sources, literary or otherwise. It was probably eclipsed by the fame of the bridge from Drobeta, which was constructed by Emperor Trajan between the two Dacian wars, and by the bridge from Sucidava-Oescus which was built later, in the time of Emperor Constantine the Great. Additionally, the bridge is located in a rather obscure place, hardly accessible in the modern era. This work restores this river crossing to its proper significance.

The Role of the Social Context for Strategy–Making Examining the impact of embeddedness on the performance of strategic initia
Free Download The Role of the Social Context for Strategy-Making: Examining the impact of embeddedness on the performance of strategic initiatives By Karolin Marx (auth.)
2004 | 274 Pages | ISBN: 3824482118 | PDF | 7 MB
In recent years, a new form of strategy-making has evolved within firms, which focuses on the continuous development of strategic initiatives. Nevertheless, our understanding of the professional management of strategic initiatives remains limited. Why do some initiatives fail to materialize? What role does organizational context, and more specifically its social aspect, play in this process? Karolin Marx analyzes the impact of the social context, represented by the embeddedness of the initiative teams in the intrafirm network, on the performance of strategic initiatives by studying a sample of 54 corporate strategic initiatives. The results support the significance of the social context for strategy-making. However, it is shown that social relationships are not only positive, but can also impede the successful development of strategic initiatives. Furthermore, it is underscored that exploratory initiatives prosper in a different social setting than their exploitive counterparts. Therefore management should create a balanced environment in which both types of initiatives can develop and survive.

The Role of Financial Markets in the Transition Process
Free Download The Role of Financial Markets in the Transition Process By Emilio Colombo, John Driffill (auth.), Dr. Emilio Colombo, Professor John Driffill (eds.)
2003 | 228 Pages | ISBN: 379080004X | PDF | 5 MB
Financial Markets play an important role in economic development, channeling saving to investments and facilitating growth. In Eastern Europe financial markets were initially much underdeveloped, and lacked the skills and infrastructure they needed to be efficient, having not acquired them in the pre-transition era. The book offers a both theoretical and empirical analysis of financial markets in transitional economies. It investigates financial markets in Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Poland, and their role in the developments in the 1990s.

The Role of Anglo–Saxon Great Hall Complexes in Kingdom Formation, in Comparison and in Context AD 500–750
Free Download Adam McBride, "The Role of Anglo-Saxon Great Hall Complexes in Kingdom Formation, in Comparison and in Context AD 500-750"
English | ISBN: 178969387X | 2020 | 370 pages | PDF | 26 MB
Following the collapse of Roman Britain, early medieval England shows little evidence for complex hierarchy or supra-regional socio-political units for nearly two hundred years, until the turn of the 7th century, when the documented emergence of Anglo-Saxon kingdoms is seemingly confirmed by the sudden appearance of the first high-status settlements - the so-called great hall complexes. This book explores the role of great hall complexes in kingdom formation through an expansive and ambitious study, incorporating new fieldwork, new quantitative methodologies and new theoretical models for the emergence of high-status settlements and the formation and consolidation of supra-regional socio-political units. This study begins with a comparative analysis of all known great hall complexes, through which evidence is presented for a broad chronological development, paralleling and contributing to the development of Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. The wider context of great hall complexes is then explored through a regional case study, charting the development of socio-economic power in the burials and settlements of the Upper Thames Valley, before situating the great hall complexes within this development. Ultimately, an overarching theoretical explanation is proposed for the emergence, development and abandonment of the great hall complexes, linking these sites with the development of a new elite ideology, the integration of new supra-regional communities and the consolidation of the newly formed Anglo-Saxon kingdoms.

The River Peoples and Histories of the Omo–Turkana Area
Free Download Timothy Clack, "The River: Peoples and Histories of the Omo-Turkana Area"
English | ISBN: 1789690331 | 2018 | 202 pages | PDF | 16 MB
The Omo-Turkana area is unlike any place on earth. Spanning parts of Ethiopia, South Sudan and Kenya, the area is today home to a unique diversity of peoples and cultures. Extraordinary fossil finds from the locale have illuminated the evolutionary origins of our species and archaeological and historical evidence has demonstrated it has been a dynamic crossroads of peoples, languages and identities for millennia. Over the past two decades, development interventions have transformed the environment and presented a threat to local forms of material and intangible heritage. Many local groups now face challenges to the long-term sustainability of their traditional ways of life. This sumptuously illustrated book brings together a remarkable collection of the world's leading archaeologists, ecologists, historians and ethnographers who specialise in the locale. Recognising the Omo-Turkana area as a crucial resource of global heritage, the authors also acknowledge its current vulnerability.
