This book is concerned with the interdisciplinary studies applying computer technologies to the theory and practice of art therapy. The contents consist of the author's sixteen papers published, twelve patents in Korea, Japan, and the U.S.A., and other relevant materials, all organized in a logical sequence. This book is intended for art therapy courses at upper undergraduate and graduate levels. No prior computer knowledge is assumed. Interpretation of drawings no longer needs to be done manually by the therapists themselves because, as this book argues, computerized systems can perform the steps of evaluation and interpretation. The difficult concept of computer science is explained in a simple and concrete way with illustrations, sample drawings, and case studies. This book explains statistical methods, various functions of a computer, technologies in digital image processing, computer algorithms, methodologies in expert systems, and the Bayesian network. All these elements can be used to improve the practice and theory in the evaluation of art and the interpretation of art. Readers do not need to worry about unfamiliar terms such as digital image, algorithm, expert system, and Bayesian network which appear here. Neither should they be concerned about pixel, cluster, edge, blurring, convex hull, regression, etc., the terms which appear later in the book. These terms will be explained with illustrations and drawings for easy understanding. Computational Art Therapy will not only promote the use of various art therapy tools but also provide a foundation for new methodologies through which art therapy researchers can develop their own methodologies to improve the practice and theory of art therapy. It will be of special interest to those studying art therapy, psychology, psychiatry, art, computer science and applied statistics.

How did the Ancient Egyptians maintain control of their state? This book considers this question from a wide variety of angles and across all periods of Egyptian history, from the Old Kingdom to Coptic times. Composite Artefacts in the Ancient Near East: Exhibiting an imaginative materiality, showing a genealogical nature' examines the complex relationship between environment, materials, society and materiality with particular reference to the composite artefacts in the ancient Near East. On the one hand are the objective and natural attributes of materials, possibly exalted from their transformation: a form of fascination immanent in all kind of technical activity which promotes the transition from the ordinary into an 'extra-ordinary' realm, imbuing the object with new meaning. On the other hand is the idea that properties of materials are not fixed attributes of 'matters', but are processual as well as relational: the qualities of artefacts are subjective and are included in the worldview of artisans making them, as well as in the mind of who observes who appreciate them. Thus, the craftsmanship is oriented towards the achievement of sophisticated products through assemblage techniques and the blending of contrasting properties and qualities of materials. The term 'composite' is a combination of the power of technology and the ability to form new images: the strict relationship between creativity, technology and manufacture produces novel interactions and solutions. Although the primary concern of this volume is to provide specific case studies in which theoretical assumptions and hypotheses can be applied to the ancient evidence, most of the papers take not only the general perspective, such as the relationship between materials and humans, but also a defined body of evidence - material, textual and visual through which they address the issue. This volume represents a first attempt to conceptualise the construction and use of composite artefacts: the richness of approaches, the development of new issues depending on specific case studies, and the overturning of widely accepted ideas, show the interest towards this category of objects and the opportunity to enlarge this field study in the future.

Community Archaeology presents the results of an investigation of wetland heritage in eastern Australia, with important contributions to the archaeology of the Tasmanian Midlands and the New England Tablelands. In this first substantial project in these bioregions since 1991, OSL and radiocarbon dating at lagoon sites provided dates going back to 8000 BP, significantly extending previous information. In both regions a range of stone artefact scatters were recorded adjacent to lagoons, suggesting associated ceremonial activities. Across the regions, new OSL dates were obtained for lunette formation. These were unexpectedly diverse, with OSL dates not clustered around the Last Glacial Maximum at 20k. With sediment particle sizes suggesting both wind and water deposition, quite individual local lunette depositional histories not closely related to global climates are indicated. The book also contributes to the important global field of community engagement and education. Unlike most projects where Aboriginal people are involved in commercial archaeology, this project focussed on research. Community Elders were research team partners during fieldwork and training. Work-integrated -learning, at University and on-country locations, proved very successful as a learning approach for young participants.
