Klobuchar - The USS Ward: An Operational History of the Ship That Fired the First American Shot of World War II McFarland & Company | 2006 | ISBN: 0786423846 | English | 288 pages | PDF | 139.13 MB In 1940, with the threat of war in the Pacific imminent, the United States was forced to expand its fleet as quickly as possible. This included reconditioning and recommissioning "four stackers" from the navy's reserve fleet. It was here that the U.S.S. Ward came into her own, earning the distinction of firing the first shot in America's war against Japan and serving three years in combat until it was sunk - with no loss of life - on December 7, 1944. From the first confrontation at Pearl Harbor through the Ward's last mission in the Philippines, this history gives a detailed account of the life and times of the ship and her crew of 125 men, 82 of whom were naval reservists from St. Paul, Minnesota. On May 15, 1918, at Mare Island Shipyard in California, Master Shipfitter J.T. Maroney laid the keel of a hull designated simply as DD-139. In a record that still stands, Maroney had the hull ready for launching in only 17 days instead of the four months usually required. One of the last Wickes class destroyers built in the waning days of World War I, the Ward was commissioned too late to participate in the action for which it was ordered. Little is known regarding the ship's World War I days because of lack of contemporary resources. The work provides a vivid description of the Ward's service during World War II. Interviews with surviving crewmen and forewords by Kenneth C. Swedberg and Guy E. Thompson, former shipmates, are included. Other sources include information from the National Archives and the Naval Historical Center. Appendices provide Ward technical data, a chronology of major events, a listing of amphibious landings and a roster of personnel. ![]() Free Download The UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules: A Commentary By David D. Caron, Lee M. Caplan 2013 | 1048 Pages | ISBN: 0199696306 | EPUB | 19 MB Reaching past the secrecy so often met in arbitration, the second edition of this commentary explains clearly and fully the workings of the UNCITRAL Rules of Arbitral Procedure recommended for use in 1976 by the United Nations. This new edition fully takes account of the revised Rules adopted in 2010 while maintaining coverage of the original Rules where these remain relevant. The differences between the old and the new Rules are clearly indicated and explained.Pulling together difficult to obtain sources from the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal, arbitrations under Chapter 11 of the North American Free Trade Agreement, and ad hoc arbitrations, it illuminates the shape the UNCITRAL Rules take in practice. The authors cogently critique that practice in the light of the negotiating history of the rules and solutions adopted by the other major private rules of arbitral procedure. To aid the specialist in the field, the practice of these various tribunals is extensively extracted and reproduced. Rich both in its analysis and sources, this text is indispensable for those working in or studying international arbitration. ![]() Free Download The Two-Income Trap: Why Middle-Class Parents are Going Broke By Elizabeth Warren, Amelia Warren Tyagi 2004 | 255 Pages | ISBN: 0465090907 | EPUB | 3 MB In this revolutionary exposé, Harvard Law School bankruptcy expert Elizabeth Warren and financial consultant Amelia Tyagi show that today's middle-class parents are increasingly trapped by financial meltdowns. Astonishingly, sending mothers to work has made families more vulnerable to financial disaster than ever before. Today's two-income family earns 75% more money than its single-income counterpart of a generation ago, but has 25% less discretionary income to cover living costs. This is "the rare financial book that sidesteps accusations of individual wastefulness to focus on institutional changes," raved the Boston Globe. Warren and Tyagi reveal how the ferocious bidding war for housing and education has silently engulfed America's suburbs, driving up the cost of keeping families in the middle class. The authors show why the usual remedies-child-support enforcement, subsidized daycare, and higher salaries for women-won't solve the problem. But as the Wall Street Journal observed, "The book is brimming with proposed solutions to the nail-biting anxiety that the middle class finds itself in: subsidized day care, school vouchers, new bank regulation, among other measures." From Senator Edward M. Kennedy to Dr. Phil to Bill Moyers, The Two-Income Trap has created a sensation among economists, politicians, and families-all those who care about America's middle-class crisis. ![]() Free Download Stanley B. Klein, "The Two Selves: Their Metaphysical Commitments and Functional Independence" English | ISBN: 0199349967 | 2013 | 176 pages | EPUB | 2 MB The Two Selves takes the position that the self is not a "thing" easily reduced to an object of scientific analysis. Rather, the self consists in a multiplicity of aspects, some of which have a neuro-cognitive basis (and thus are amenable to scientific inquiry) while other aspects are best construed as first-person subjectivity, lacking material instantiation. As a consequence of its potential immateriality, the subjective aspect of self cannot be taken as an object and therefore is not easily amenable to treatment by current scientific methods. ![]() Free Download William Shakespeare, "The Two Gentlemen of Verona (Webster's German Thesaurus Edition)" English | 2006 | pages: 143 | ISBN: 0497259621 | PDF | 1,0 mb This edition is written in English.
