On Science
Free Download On Science By Brian Ridley
2001 | 240 Pages | ISBN: 0415249805 | PDF | 4 MB
Can science explain everything? Brian Ridley, a physicist himself, explores this question and more in this compelling exploration of both the scope and limits of science. Tracing back to the roots of scientific thinking in a world of 'magical ideas', he argues that science shares more with magic than we are often led to believe. The book also explores the often overlooked relationship between science and mathematics and the uneasy relationship between the two. This is neatly linked to a fascinating discussion of relativity and quantum theory, reminding us of the many perspectives on offer within science. On Science is essential reading for all those interested in the way we think about and picture science, where it is now, and where it is going.

On Poetry
Free Download Glyn Maxwell, "On Poetry"
English | 2012 | pages: 217 | ISBN: 1849430853, 0674970829 | PDF | 0,6 mb
A collection of short essays and reflections on poetry from the acclaimed British poet Glyn Maxwell. These essays illustrates Maxwell's poetic philosophy, that the greatest verse arises from a harmony of mind and body, and that poetic forms originate in human necessities - breath, heartbeat, footstep, posture. He speaks of his inspirations, his models, and takes us inside the strange world of the Creative Writing Class, where four young hopefuls grapple with love, sex, cheap wine and hard work. With examples from canonical poets, this is a beautiful, accessible guide to the most ancient and sublime of the realms of literature.

On Behavior
Free Download Keith Trimm, "On Behavior"
English | 2012 | pages: 216 | ISBN: 1300117850 | PDF | 0,8 mb
On Behavior is a book in 3 sections that deals with what makes people tick. Section one is my description of types of behavior, section two is personal interviews with real people about behavior and section three is my observations of behavior as I have seen it. None of this is new or ground breaking; it's my commentary on human behavior as I've seen it along with a large dose of interpersonal interviews tossed in. I have an idea, I don't know if it's a theory so I'll call it an idea for now. That idea is that people are made up of bits and pieces of mental stuff like grains of sand scooped up from a sand pile and placed in a bucket and aged with a lifetime of experiences and spiced with emotions. Each grain of sand is a personality trait randomly selected and added to the pile to create a unique person with traits shared with but not in the same combination with everyone else. My instinct is to think that everyone would be for the most part alike when it comes to certain things.

On Awareness A Collection of Philosophical Dialogues
Free Download On Awareness: A Collection of Philosophical Dialogues By Nicholas J. Pappas
2011 | 202 Pages | ISBN: 087586841X | PDF | 4 MB
The reader of this book is invited to enjoy a tasty feast of bite-sized philosophical dialogues. One reader might choose to enjoy a single dialogue at a time. Other readers might prefer to try a few at a time, in a "dim sum" approach to thoughtful inquiry. Either way, the reader will find a variety of individual themes that reflect upon each other and add up to a larger discussion. Sections center on notions including Peace, Dread, Daring, Ignoring, Hiding, Doubt, Sparks, Time, Patience, Fluff, Dwelling, Revealing, Stepping Back, Knowing, Worry, and Gratitude. As with the author's previous two books with Algora, the main character, Director, leads his interlocutors through an analysis of the issues in question in each dialogue. Sometimes the characters reach agreement; sometimes they don't. But in all cases light is shed on the questions at hand.Readers will find that the book stimulates thought about important topics, and that, if read with other people, it stimulates conversation. A reader might not agree with the conclusion that the characters draw in a particular dialogue, or even how they handled the discussion, but the reader will often find him or herself smiling nonetheless. Like Nick's previous two books, the style here is that of a Platonic dialogue; the language is concise, pointed, and fun.

2014 | 176 Pages | ISBN: 1905539452 | PDF | 9 MB
In the context of an ageing population, visual impairment is having an increasing social and economic impact. This timely book will enable healthcare professionals in a diverse range of settings to enhance their expertise in assessing the ophthalmic conditions of the elderly, adopt a holistic approach to patient care, and improve their ability to deal with organisational challenges involving visually impaired elderly people. Sue Watkinson and her co-authors have used their broad professional and academic knowledge to analyse issues relating to the major ocular diseases affecting the elderly. These include cataract, age-related macular degeneration, chronic open-angle glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, herpes zoster ophthalmicus and dementia. In addition to describing the pathogenesis, clinical features and risk factors for each disease, they highlight the role of specialist ophthalmic nurses in informing and educating patients, managing ophthalmic treatment procedures, promoting safe environments and maintaining quality of life for elderly individuals suffering from age-related ophthalmic conditions. Above all, the authors show that providing the right care for this vulnerable group of people in our society will help reduce the economic and psychological burden of sight loss and re-establish a good quality of life for the older person with visual impairment. Old Age and Urban Poverty in the Developing World The Shanty Towns of Buenos Aires
Free Download Old Age and Urban Poverty in the Developing World: The Shanty Towns of Buenos Aires By Peter Lloyd-Sherlock
1997 | 280 Pages | ISBN: 0333682866 | PDF | 18 MB
Many countries in the developing world are facing a rapid acceleration in population ageing. To date, this problem has generated little interest either from academics or policy-makers. Studies which focus exclusively on social security are of little relevance for the majority of elderly in these regions, for whom the possibilities of saving or making pension contributions are remote. This book takes a more comprehensive approach, combining analysis of social security issues in all developing countries with micro-level case studies of poor urban elderly survival strategies in Buenos Aires.

Ohio's Canal Country Wineries
Free Download Claudia J. Taller, "Ohio's Canal Country Wineries"
English | 2015 | pages: 96 | ISBN: 1467114448 | PDF | 149,5 mb
In the early 18th century, pioneers cleared land in Ohio's Western Reserve and found it suitable for farming, but until the Ohio-Erie Canal opened, it was difficult for them to share the fruit of their labor. Ohio's Canal Country Wineries captures the spirit of those who lived off the land from Cleveland to New Philadelphia along the Cuyahoga River and down to the Muskingum River-the path that the Ohio-Erie Canal took when it was built in 1832. As canal country began opening up, wineries along the Ohio River and the shores and islands of Lake Erie produced so much wine that Ohio became known as "Vinland." Now, the rich and fertile farmland along the canal has also been cultivated with vineyards, and the region is home to close to 50 wineries.
