Journeys of Women in Science and Engineering No Universal Constants
Free Download Journeys of Women in Science and Engineering: No Universal Constants By Susan A. Ambrose; Barbara B. Lazarus
1997 | 461 Pages | ISBN: 1566395275 | PDF | 87 MB
Today the image of the scientist is still that of a white man in a white lab coat. This book questions this stereotype and the assumption that the practitioners of science and engineering have a uniform look and follow one particular path through life. The scientists and engineers featured in this book are all women. They come from different races, ethnicities, and socioeconomic backgrounds. They have different sexual orientations. Some have disabilities. The core of this important book is 88 profiles with photographs of women scientists and engineers whose diversity is stunning. Journeys of Women in Science and Engineering includes research scientists and engineers in areas from biochemistry to mathematics, from neuroscience to computer science, from animal science to civil engineering. It includes those who have made careers in public service-people like Dr. Joycelyn Elders, the recent U.S. Surgeon General; Dr. Susan Love, the breast cancer activist; and Rhea L. Graham, the first woman and first African American director of the Bureau of Mines. It includes Nobel Prize winners, beginning assistant professors, division directors of corporations, and even an engineering school dean. The indexes by field of speciality make it easy for the reader to compare the life stories of, for example, all the chemical engineers or all the mathematicians. There is also an index by employment sector. The book begins with a thorough introduction to the history of women in science and engineering.

Islam At The Gates How Christendom Defeated the Ottoman Turks
Free Download Islam At The Gates: How Christendom Defeated the Ottoman Turks By Diane Moczar
2011 | 219 Pages | ISBN: 1933184256 | PDF | 2 MB
Historian Diane Moczar pulls back the curtain on one of the most important acts in the drama of Muslim aggression against the West: the 500-year-long siege of Europe by the Ottoman Turks. Tracing the rise of the Turkish people from wandering Asian tribe to mighty pan-continental empire, Islam at the Gates chronicles the heroes and villains, the battles and atrocities, the tragic errors and timely miracles, that marked the Ottomans incursions from Europe s borders to the very heart of Christendom; and then, by the grace of God, their eventual repulsion and final defeat. In these pages you'll encounter:The bold sultans, timid emperors, and vile traitors who aided the Turkish advance and the popes who tirelessly preached Crusade against itBrave saints who rallied Christian forces against the invaders including the hardy warrior-monk who died in battle at the age of sixty-oneThe island fortress whose rag-tag defenders continually thwarted superior numbers of Ottoman attackers defying even the great sultan SuleimanThe suffering of millions of Christian families in occupied lands their children kidnapped and forced into Muslim armies and haremsFolk heroes from the hills of Hungary and Albania who rose up against their Ottoman overlords and whose guerilla tactics inspired their peopleThe tragic fall of Constantinople, seat of Eastern Christianity its people slaughtered, its treasures plundered, its sacred places befouled Europe s pivotal, improbable pair of victories at Lepanto and Vienna, and the defeat of the last great Turkish offensive on September 11, 1697Solid history and dramatic narrative make Islam at the Gates a moving look at Europe s long struggle against the Turks. But the author s shrewd Catholic outlook also makes it an edifying one. Had these events unfolded just a little differently, Christian civilization might have been conquered by the sword of Allah. If we fail to learn the lessons of history, Dr. Moczar warns, the West may yet fall.Table of Contents:-1. The Ottomans Come on the Scene2. Ottoman Success in the Fifteenth Century3. The City Falls and the Heroes Die4. The Suffering of the Balkans5. Albania, Rhodes, Otranto6. A Semi-Peaceful Interlude7. Jihad at Sea8. Hungary's Passion9. Iran and French Orientalism Persia in the Literary Culture of Nineteenth–Century France
Free Download Julia Caterina Hartley, "Iran and French Orientalism: Persia in the Literary Culture of Nineteenth-Century France"
English | ISBN: 0755645596 | 2023 | 298 pages | EPUB, PDF | 4 MB + 49 MB
New translations of Persian literature into French, the invention of the Aryan myth, increased travel between France and Iran, and the unveiling of artefacts from ancient Susa at the Louvre Museum are among the factors that radically altered France's perception of Iran during the long nineteenth century. And this is reflected in the literary culture of the period. In an ambitious study spanning poetry, historiography, fiction, travel-writing, ballet, opera, and marionette theatre, Julia Hartley reveals the unique place that Iran held in the French literary imagination between 1829 and 1912. Iran's history and culture remained a constant source of inspiration across different generations and artistic movements, from the 'Oriental' poems of Victor Hugo to those of Anna de Noailles and Théophile Gautier's strategic citation of Persian poetry to his daughter Judith Gautier's full-blown rewriting of a Persian epic. Writing about Iran could also serve to articulate new visions of world history and religion, as was the case in the intellectual debates that took place between Michelet, Renan, and Al-Afghani. Alternatively joyous, as in Félicien David's opera

Inverse Problems for Fractional Partial Differential Equations
Free Download Barbara Kaltenbacher, "Inverse Problems for Fractional Partial Differential Equations "
English | ISBN: 1470472457 | 2023 | 505 pages | PDF | 8 MB
As the title of the book indicates, this is primarily a book on partial differential equations (PDEs) with two definite slants: toward inverse problems and to the inclusion of fractional derivatives. The standard paradigm, or direct problem, is to take a PDE, including all coefficients and initial/boundary conditions, and to determine the solution. The inverse problem reverses this approach asking what information about coefficients of the model can be obtained from partial information on the solution. Answering this question requires knowledge of the underlying physical model, including the exact dependence on material parameters. The last feature of the approach taken by the authors is the inclusion of fractional derivatives. This is driven by direct physical applications: a fractional derivative model often allows greater adherence to physical observations than the traditional integer order case. The book also has an extensive historical section and the material that can be called "fractional calculus" and ordinary differential equations with fractional derivatives. This part is accessible to advanced undergraduates with basic knowledge on real and complex analysis. At the other end of the spectrum, lie nonlinear fractional PDEs that require a standard graduate level course on PDEs.

In Ruins is a meditation on ruins and, most particularly, a history of our fascination with them.

I Was Vermeer The Rise and Fall of the Twentieth Century's Greatest Forger
Free Download Frank Wynne, "I Was Vermeer: The Rise and Fall of the Twentieth Century's Greatest Forger"
English | 2006 | pages: 288 | ISBN: 1582345937, 074756681X | EPUB | 2,1 mb
Frank Wynne's remarkable book tells the story of Han van Meegeren, a paranoid, drug-addicted, second-rate painter whose Vermeer forgeries made him a secret superstar of the art world―and along the way, it reveals the collusion and ego that, even today, allow art forgery to thrive. During van Meegeren's heyday as a forger of Vermeers, he earned 50 million dollars, the acclamation of the world's press, and the satisfaction of swindling the Nazis. His canvases were so nearly authentic that they would almost certainly be prized among the catalogue of Vermeers if he had not confessed. And, no doubt, he never would have confessed at all if he hadn't been trapped in a catch-22: he had thrived so noticably during the war that when it ended, he was quickly arrested as a Nazi collaborator. His only defense was to admit that he himself had painted the remarkable "Vermeers" that had passed through his hands―a confession the public refused to believe, until, in a huge media event, the courts staged the public painting of what would be van Meegeren's last "Vermeer." I Was Vermeer is an utterly gripping real-life mystery, capturing both the life of the consummate art forger, phenomenally skilled and yet necessarily unrecognized, and the equally fascinating work of the experts who identify forgeries and track down their perpetrators. Wry, amoral, irreverent, and Descriptionted like a thriller, it is the first major book in forty years on this astonishing episode in history.
