To the south, through the Dardanelles and the Aegean Sea, lay the Mediterranean, around which the Greek, Roman, Persian, and Arab worlds revolved. To the north, through the Bosporus, lay the Black Sea, with its Russian and eastern European coastline. And across the narrow Bosporus was Asia Minor, bridge to the Orient. Because of its strategic location, the city on the Golden Horn was coveted by a succession of different peoples. But even though it frequently was under siege, even though control of it often changed hands, and even though, indeed, it was conquered and leveled more than once, the city proved to be virtually immortal. Founded nearly twenty-seven centuries ago as the Greek colony of Byzantium, the city was harassed by the barbaric Thracians, attacked by the Persians, vied for by the Athenians and Spartans. Weakened and dispirited, its citizens finally were forced to seek the protection of Rome, and the city became little more than a Roman outpost. Then, in the fourth century, the Roman Emperor Constantine I decided to build his capital on the site. It was in the new city of Constantinople that ancient Greco-Roman culture was married to Eastern Orthodox Christianity and that Western civilization became Christian civilization. As the center of the vast Byzantine Empire, the city was one of the richest and most important on earth. But because of its wealth, it was sacked by the Crusaders in 1204. And because of its strategic location, it was conquered by the Ottoman Turks in 1453. Since then, as the city of Istanbul, it has remained an international metropolis, a city of East and West, a city whose great paintings, mosaics, statuary, and architecture reflect the many cultures that have been centered there and the many ages the city has survived. Here is its story. ![]() Free Download Islams and Modernities By Aziz Al-Azmeh 1996 | 206 Pages | ISBN: 1859841066 | PDF | 4 MB Challenging the similarly romantic, ahistoric and irreconcilable notions of Islamic and Western cultures, this book cuts through conventional wisdom and common cliches to highlight the plurality and historicity of both. For Aziz Al-Azmeh, the Orientalist and racist view of Islam is nothing but the mirror-image of the myths propagated by the Islamic fundamentalists an radicals. In this book he demonstrates both views share an erroneous and an historical conception of Islam as an unchanging and monolithic entity. Moreover, this analysis dissects the mutual implication of both the dominant Western discourse and its supposed primary opponent, postmodernism, in this form of essentialism. There is no one, homogeneous Islam, and this book highlights the diversity and plurality of forms of the Muslim tradition, seeking to understand historically the phenomenon of fundamentalism, amongst other strands, as a profoundly modern ideology. Challenging the stereotypes and legends of both its opponents and proponents, the book traces how political Islam breaks with core elements of the Muslim tradition and, at the same time, roots many of its concepts in European reactionary and romantic thought. This edition is expanded to include further studies of the role of the secular and the popular in Islamic societies. Aziz Al-Azmeh is the author of Arabic Thought and Islamic Societies, Ibn Khaldun and Muslim Kingship. ![]() Free Download Is It Wrong to Buy Sex?: A Debate English | 2024 | ISBN: 0367770539 | 251 Pages | PDF (True) | 2 MB Is it wrong for a man to buy sex from a woman? In this book, Holly Lawford-Smith argues that it is wrong: commercial sex is quintessentially hierarchical sex, and it is wrong both to have, and to perpetuate a market in, hierarchical sex. Angie Pepper argues that it isn't wrong: men are permitted to buy sex from those women who freely choose to sell it. ![]() Free Download Inventing the New: History and Politics in Jean-Paul Sartre by Luca Basso, Dave Mesing English | 2023 | ISBN: 9004686967 | 263 Pages | True PDF | 2.38 MB ![]() Free Download Introduction to Toxicology; Fourth Edition by John Timbrell English | 2023 | ISBN: 1032036923 | 317 pages | True PDF | 24.53 MB ![]() Free Download Introduction to Simulations of Semiconductor Lasers English | 2024 | ISBN: 1032209046 | 364 Pages | PDF (True) | 6 MB Simulations play an increasingly important role not only in scientific research but also in engineering developments. Introduction to Simulations of Semiconductor Lasers introduces senior undergraduates to the design of semiconductor lasers and their simulations. The book begins with explaining the physics and fundamental characteristics behind semiconductor lasers and their applications. It presumes little prior knowledge, such that only a familiarity with the basics of electromagnetism and quantum mechanics is required. The book transitions from textbook explanations, equations, and formulas to ready-to-run numeric codes that enable the visualization of concepts and simulation studies. Multiple chapters are supported by MATLAB code which can be accessed by the students. These are ready-to-run, but they can be modified to simulate other structures if desired. ![]() Free Download Introduction to Nuclear Science: Fourth Edition by Jeff C. Woodruff, "Introduction to Computational Optimization Models for Production Planning in a Supply Chain" English | 2006 | pages: 261 | ISBN: 3540298789, 3642067557, 3540000232 | PDF | 1,9 mb provide models that could be used by do-it-yourselfers and also can be used toprovideunderstandingofthebackgroundissuessothatonecandoabetter job of working with the (proprietary) algorithms of the software vendors. In this book we strive to provide models that capture many of the - tails faced by ?rms operating in a modern supply chain, but we stop short of proposing models for economic analysis of the entire multi-player chain. In other words, we produce models that are useful for planning within a supply chain rather than models for planning the supply chain. The usefulness of the models is enhanced greatly by the fact that they have been implemented - ing computer modeling languages. Implementations are shown in Chapter 7, which allows solutions to be found using a computer. A reasonable question is: why write the book now? It is a combination of opportunities that have recently become available. The availability of mod- inglanguagesandcomputersthatprovidestheopportunitytomakepractical use of the models that we develop. Meanwhile, software companies are p- viding software for optimized production planning in a supply chain. The opportunity to make use of such software gives rise to a need to understand some of the issues in computational models for optimized planning. This is best done by considering simple models and examples. ![]() Free Download Introducing Wildlife in Urban Ecosystems By Amartya Deb 2017 | 11 Pages | ISBN: 9383419547 | PDF | 1 MB As urbanization sprawls into natural areas, the traditional space for wildlife is diminishing. At the same time, in very unique ways the urban is accommodating certain species of plant and animals. Can it be that in future the urban and natural will be one integrated unit? The book explores briefly a few critical aspects towards this vision. The novel and often incidental urban‐wild arrangements, natural capacity to adapt and human‐animal politics are discussed along with design measures, conservation policies and socioeconomic impacts. One of the significant features of the book has been to appreciate the characteristics of 'wildlife' so as to inject it within urban spaces through a range of methods. ![]() Free Download Introducing Functional Programming Using C#: Leveraging a New Perspective for OOP Developers by Vaskaran Sarcar English | September 10, 2023 | ISBN: 1484296966 | 328 pages | PDF | 3.06 Mb Understand the power of C#, a multi-paradigm language.
