Media Relations of the Anti-War Movement The Battle for Hearts and Minds
Media Relations of the Anti-War Movement: The Battle for Hearts and Minds By Ian Taylor
2017 | 257 Pages | ISBN: 1315525674 | PDF | 3 MB
In this book, Ian Taylor examines how a social movement, the anti-Iraq War movement in the UK, engaged with the media as a part of their campaigning against the invasion and occupation of Iraq. Moving beyond content analysis to draw upon interviews with locally based journalists and activists, Taylor examines how locally based anti-war groups engaged with their local press, as well as how those groups were reported on by the local press in their respective areas. In the process of exploring these ideas, the book takes on questions like:* How did local journalists assess the legitimacy of the anti-war movement?* How, why, and to what extent did opponents of the war pursue local press coverage?* What bearing did the social composition of the movement have on the way they set about engaging with the media?* How did the local press handle the controversy surrounding opposition to military action against Iraq?Media Relations of the Anti-War Movement makes a unique contribution to research on the interactions between social movements and the media and plugs a major gap in the literature on the Iraq War and the media.Ian Taylor is a University Teacher with the Department of Social Sciences at Loughborough University, and a Distance Learning Tutor with the Department of Media and Communications at the University of Leicester. He is currently researching the interactions between social movements and the media.Reviews:'The media activities of progressive movements and the work of local and alternative newspapers have been too often ignored by the academy. Here Ian Taylor throws the spotlight on the peace movement's relations with the local and alternative press over the Iraq invasion of 2003. It is highly original, richly theorised, massively researched, tightly argued - and crucial reading for media academics and students.' - Richard Lance Keeble, Professor of Journalism, University of Lincoln, UK'Work on news media and war was has largely been concentrated at a national level, involving elite actors and national media outlets, so Ian Taylor's work makes a rare and significant contribution in offering a keenly-theorised, ground-level analysis based on local anti-war groups and their relations with local media in Britain - areas whose operations and significance cannot merely be extrapolated from research or theory on a national scale. Taylor uses evidence from content analysis and interviews to argue that pressure from popular social movements matters, and to provide a critique of the media relations of the British Stop the War Coalition and of 'challenger' sources more generally, so this is an important book for students of social movements, of media and war and of the role of local media.' - Peter Goddard, University of Liverpool, UK'Anti-war movements since 9/11 and the initiation of the 'war on terror' have faced tremendous obstacles in their efforts to achieve political influence. In this ground breaking work, Taylor offers a nuanced and fascinating analysis of UK anti-war groups and their relationship to local media with respect to the 2003 invasion of Iraq and subsequent occupation. Documenting both the strengths and the weaknesses of these grass roots groups, it is essential reading for all those seeking to understand the potential of anti-war movements to influence public debate and the barriers that need to be overcome.' - Piers Robinson, Chair in Politics, Society and Political Journalism, Department of Journalism Studies, University of Sheffield, UK'This is a theoretically rich study with original and fascinating empirical work on traditionally neglected areas: local news and the media strategies of grassroots activism. This is a deeply valuable contribution at a time in which local journalism faces a diverse set of challenges and activists vie for the attention of wider publics in politically unsettling times.' - Katy Parry, European Journal of Communication

Localizing Islam in Europe Turkish Islamic Communities in Germany and the Netherlands
Localizing Islam in Europe: Turkish Islamic Communities in Germany and the Netherlands By Ahmet Yükleyen
2012 | 304 Pages | ISBN: 0815650582 | PDF | 6 MB
In the twentieth century, Muslim minorities emerged in Europe seeking work, a refuge from conflict, and higher life standards. As a result, there are now more than 12 million Muslims in Western Europe. As these immigrants became permanent residents, the Islamic communities they developed had to respond to their European context, reinterpreting Islam in accordance with local conditions. In Localizing Islam in Europe, Yükleyen brings this adaptation to light, demonstrating how Islam and Europe have shaped one another and challenging the idea that Islamic beliefs are inherently antithetical to European secular, democratic, and pluralist values.Yûkleyen compares five different forms of religious communities among Muslim immigrants in the Netherlands and Germany that represent a spectrum from moderate to revolutionary Islamic opinions. Drawing on extensive fieldwork, he finds that, despite differences in goals and beliefs, these communities play an intermediary role, negotiating between the social and religious needs of Muslims and the socioeconomic, legal, and political context of Europe. Yûkleyen's rich ethnography shows that there is no single form of assimilated and privatized "European Islam" but rather Islamic communities and their interpretations and practices that localize Islam in Europe.Ahmet Yûkleyen is Croft Assistant Professor of Anthropology and International Studies at the University of Mississippi. His research focuses on anthropology of religion, ethnicity, Islamic movements, and multiculturalism."Despite challenges of the post 9/11 context, Yukleyen's rich ethnography shows that religion is a resource for integration not only by bonding among Muslims but also bridging activism with the larger society in Western Europe"-Jocelyne Cesari, Director of the Islam in the West Program, Harvard University and John Hopkins University"Ahmet Yukleyen's Localizing Islam in Europe cuts through the shrill debates to provide a rich and authoritative portrait of the lived reality of Muslims adapting to life in Europe. His insights will be invaluable for student, scholars, and policymakers alike."-Peter Mandaville, George Mason University, author of Global Political Islam"Ahmet Yükleyen provides a clear and convincing account of the different orientations of the major Turkish religious institutions in Germany and the Netherlands. All those interested in Islam in Europe today should read this book."-John R. Bowen, author of Can Islam Be French? Pluralism and Pragmatism in a Secularist State"A compelling and important contribution to our understanding of Islam in Europe."-Esra Özyürek, University of California, San Diego

Linear Algebra for the Young Mathematician
Steven H. Weintraub, "Linear Algebra for the Young Mathematician "
English | ISBN: 1470450844 | 2019 | 389 pages | PDF | 4 MB
Linear Algebra for the Young Mathematician is a careful, thorough, and rigorous introduction to linear algebra. It adopts a conceptual point of view, focusing on the notions of vector spaces and linear transformations, and it takes pains to provide proofs that bring out the essential ideas of the subject. It begins at the beginning, assuming no prior knowledge of the subject, but goes quite far, and it includes many topics not usually treated in introductory linear algebra texts, such as Jordan canonical form and the spectral theorem. While it concentrates on the finite-dimensional case, it treats the infinite-dimensional case as well. The book illustrates the centrality of linear algebra by providing numerous examples of its application within mathematics. It contains a wide variety of both conceptual and computational exercises at all levels, from the relatively straightforward to the quite challenging. Readers of this book will not only come away with the knowledge that the results of linear algebra are true, but also with a deep understanding of why they are true.

Life of a Triathlete Race Preparation
Life of a Triathlete: Race Preparation by Meredith B. Kessler
English | August 19, 2016 | ISBN: 1945840013 | 226 pages | EPUB | 0.34 Mb
Life of a Triathlete: Race Preparation A guide for amateur and pro athletes In May of 2011, after thirty-nine straight Ironman finishes, Meredith Kessler passed out on the twenty-second mile of the marathon at Ironman St. George. At the time, she was all alone in second place. Even as a veteran of the sport, she still made a mistake that cost her $25,000 in podium and sponsorship funding and a $3,000 emergency room hospital bill. Life of a Triathlete is a guidebook to help elite and amateur competitors reach their goals by reducing the trial and error that plagues the sport. Triathlon books have traditionally focused on some combination of training methods, gear, and inspirational coaching. While these subjects, understandably, cannot be ignored when participating in the sport, there are ample additional avenues to consider in the effort to help you reach your objectives. Kessler approaches the book through a practical, business point of view, where the things done in preparation for a race will enable an athlete's peak performance. In the first two books of her Life of a Triathlete series, she covers topics ranging from the off-season, nutrition, hydration, and supplements to race-week tips, marketing, social media, expenses, taxes, and general organization. Life of a Triathlete examines how a perennial above-average amateur learned, through much trial and error, how to elevate herself and navigate the pro ranks. This manual does not discriminate based on level of competitiveness and the tips and techniques can be used across all sports. Meredith Kessler enjoys sharing her learned knowledge with the triathlon world and beyond so that athletes everywhere can reduce the time it takes to achieve their dreams. Authored By: Meredith B. Kessler 10x Ironman Champion, 20x 70.3 Champion & 50+ Full Ironman Races Completed & Aaron Kessler entrepreneur Foreword by: Chris Wright - competing amateur triathlete & businessman
