Free Download Shakespeare's French Connection: How the History, Literature and Culture of France Permeate the Plays by Margrethe Jolly
English | July 25, 2024 | ISBN: 1476695385, 9781476652696 | True EPUB | 257 pages | 11.8 MB
Shakespeare most often locates his plays in Italy and England, and his third most frequent setting is France. Indeed, nearly 70 scenes at a conservative count, and perhaps as many as 100, take place in France in a variety of significant geographical locations. French is also the foreign language Shakespeare uses most; he is sufficiently au fait with French to use it for puns and scatological jokes. He weaves in comments on French fashion, ways of walking, and skills in horsemanship, sword-playing and dancing. Not only does Shakespeare draw directly or indirectly upon French chroniclers but he also presents us with parts of French history. Many French characters people his stage; sometimes historical figures appear as themselves, and sometimes they are alluded to. And the plays demonstrate Shakespeare's reading in French literature and how that influenced him.

Free Download Shakespeare Studies in Colonial Bengal : The Early Phase By Hema Dahiya
2014 | 228 Pages | ISBN: 144386353X | PDF | 1 MB
Shakespeare Studies in Colonial Bengal: The Early Phase represents an important direction in the area of historical research on the role of English education in India, particularly with regards to Shakespeare studies at the Hindu College, the first native college of European education in Calcutta, the capital city of British India during the nineteenth century. Focusing on the developments that led to the introduction of English education in India, Dr Dahiya's book highlights the pioneering role that the eminent Shakespeare teachers at Hindu College, namely Henry Derozio, D.L. Richardson and H.M. Percival, played in accelerating the movement of the Bengal Renaissance. Drawing on available information about colonial Bengal, the book exposes both the angular interpretations of Shakespeare by fanatical scholars on both sides of the cultural divide, and the serious limitations of the present-day reductive theory of postcolonialism, emphasizing how in both cases such interpretations led to distorted readings of Shakespeare. Offering a comprehensive account of how English education in India came to be introduced in an atmosphere of clashing ideas and conflicting interests emanating from various forces at work in the early nineteenth century, Shakespeare Studies in Colonial Bengal places, in a normative perspective, the part played by each major actor in this highly-contested historical context, including the Christian missionaries, British orientalists, Macaulay's Minute, the secular duo of Rammohan Roy and David Hare, and, above all, the Shakespeare teachers at Hindu College, the first native institution of European education in India.

Free Download Shake Terribly the Earth : Stories from an Appalachian Family By Sarah Beth Childers
2013 | 134 Pages | ISBN: 0821420623 | EPUB | 1 MB
Sarah Beth Childers grew up listening to stories. She heard them riding to school with her mother, playing Yahtzee in her Granny's nicotine cloud, walking to the bowling alley with her grandfather, and eating casseroles at the family reunions she attended every year. In a thoughtful, humorous voice born of Appalachian storytelling, Childers brings to life in these essays events that affected the entire region: large families that squeezed into tiny apartments during the Great Depression, a girl who stepped into a rowboat from a second-story window during Huntington's 1937 flood, brothers who were whisked away to World War II and Vietnam, and a young man who returned home from the South Pacific and worked his life away as a railroad engineer. Childers uses these family tales to make sense of her personal journey and find the joy and clarity that often emerge after the earth shakes terribly beneath us.

Free Download Shingo Hamada, "Seafood: Ocean to the Plate "
English | ISBN: 1138191876 | 2018 | 138 pages | AZW3 | 5 MB
Seafood draws on controversial themes in the interdisciplinary field of food studies, with case studies from different eras and geographic regions. Using familiar commodities, this accessible book will help students understand cutting-edge issues in sustainability and ask readers to think about the future of an industry that has lain waste to its own resources. Examining the practical aspects of fisheries and seafood leads the reader through discussions of the core elements of anthropological method and theory, and the book concludes with discussions of sustainable seafood and current efforts to save what is left of marine ecosystems. Students will be encouraged to think about their own seafood consumption through project assignments that challenge them to trace the commodity chains of the seafood on their own plates.

Schools of Thought brings together a cast of prominent scholars to assess, with unprecedented breadth and vigor, the intellectual revolution over the past quarter century in the social sciences. This collection of twenty essays stems from a 1997 conference that celebrated the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Institute for Advanced Study's School of Social Science. The authors, who represent a wide range of disciplines, are all associated with the School's emphasis on interpretive social science, which rejects models from the hard sciences and opts instead for a humanistic approach to social inquiry.

Free Download Schools and Public Health : Past, Present, Future By Michael Gard; Carolyn Pluim
2014 | 280 Pages | ISBN: 0739172581 | EPUB | 1 MB
Schools and Public Health is a meditation on the past, present, and future of the relationship between public health and American public schools. Gard and Pluim begin by developing a historical account of the way schools have been used in the public health policy arena in America. They then look in detail at more contemporary examples of school-based public health policies and initiatives in order to come to a judgment about whether and to what extent it makes sense to use schools in this way. With this is as the foundation, the book then offers answers to the question of why schools have so readily been drawn into public health policy formulations. First, seeing schools as a kind of 'miracle factory' is a long standing habit of mind that discourages careful consideration of alternative public health strategies. Second, schools have been implicated in public health policy in strategic ways by actors often with unstated political, cultural, ideological, and financial motivations. Finally, the authors call for a more sophisticated approach to public health policy in schools and suggest some criteria for judging the potential efficacy of school-based interventions. In short, the potential effectiveness of proposed interventions needs to be assessed not only against existing historical evidence, but also against the competing roles society expects schools to play and the working-life realities for those charged with implementing public health policies in schools.

2004 | 190 Pages | ISBN: 0789025523 | EPUB | 1 MB
Help your clients successfully integrate the angel and the rebel! This book will help psychotherapists, pastoral and marriage and family counselors, and medical/nursing service providers guide patients and clients in turning negative actions and decisions into positive ones. In Saints and Rogues, you will find: an assessment of the life of Harry Stack Sullivan (1892-1949)-- called "rogue therapist" by his peers; today a hero for his influence on psychotherapy practice bullying in school--the creation of a prevention program used at the K-5 level designed to appeal to the empathy of the children who are bullied as well as the perpetrators an examination of historical, sociological, and psychoanalytic research about Italian Americans stereotyped as rogues during the twentieth century and in the media today interviews with individuals self-identified as "third gender" who live as neither men nor women--and their frequent encounters with spirituality and much more! Saints and Rogues: Conflicts and Convergence in Psychotherapy reevaluates the ethical ramifications of dual/duel relationships, revealing how a roguish character may be seen as saintly and vice versa. This book emphasizes the importance of seeing and treating one another with the same consideration as we would give ourselves.
