Every wireless call, every high-speed data link inside a computer, every radar echo and every pulse of light racing through an undersea cable depends on one idea: electromagnetic energy can be guided. Transmission lines and waveguides are the structures that do the guiding, and a working knowledge of them is the foundation on which microwave engineering, antenna design, high-speed digital design, radar, satellite communication and photonics are built. Chapters 2 to 6 develop transmission-line theory from the telegrapher's equations, through reflections, standing waves and the Smith chart, to impedance matching and time-domain transients. Chapter 7 applies this theory to the planar lines found on every printed circuit board and integrated circuit. Chapters 8 to 11 move from circuit quantities to fields and develop the theory of guided waves in parallel-plate, rectangular, circular and dielectric guides, including optical fibres. Chapter 12 treats cavity and planar resonators, Chapter 13 introduces the scattering-parameter description of microwave networks and the passive components built from lines and guides, and Chapter 14 shows how filters are designed from lumped prototypes and realised with lines, coupled lines and resonators. Chapter 15 closes with measurement techniques and numerical methods.
