Reading the Bible after Christendom
Free Download Reading the Bible after Christendom By Lloyd Pietersen
2018 | 170 Pages | ISBN: 1842277359 | EPUB | 1 MB
Pietersen argues that for too long the Old Testament has been the primary source for Christian ethics and the letters of Paul for Christian discipleship. Without disparaging these sources the author suggests that the church in a postmodern, post-Christian society needs to look at Scripture with a different focus. This book seeks to examine what reading the Bible might look like in the current period when the church is no longer central and the Christian story is not well known. 'This is a provocative and refreshing exploration of the possibilities inherent i[1;5Cn reading Scripture from the margins, rather than from within the compromised and rapidly receding structures of Christendom. A worthy addition to the challenging After Christendom series, Lloyd Pietersen's thoughtful work moves the discussion forward in ways that are at times controversial, at other times stretching, but at all times constructive. Highly recommended!' - Brian Harris, Principal, Vose Seminary, Perth Australia

Reading Trauma Narratives The Contemporary Novel and the Psychology of Oppression
Free Download Reading Trauma Narratives : The Contemporary Novel and the Psychology of Oppression By Laurie Vickroy
2015 | 216 Pages | ISBN: 081393737X | EPUB | 1 MB
As part of the contemporary reassessment of trauma that goes beyond Freudian psychoanalysis, Laurie Vickroy theorizes trauma in the context of psychological, literary, and cultural criticism. Focusing on novels by Margaret Atwood, William Faulkner, Toni Morrison, Jeanette Winterson, and Chuck Palahniuk, she shows how these writers try to enlarge our understanding of the relationship between individual traumas and the social forces of injustice, oppression, and objectification. Further, she argues, their work provides striking examples of how the devastating effects of trauma-whether sexual, socioeconomic, or racial-on individual personality can be depicted in narrative. Vickroy offers a unique blend of interpretive frameworks. She draws on theories of trauma and narrative to analyze the ways in which her selected texts engage readers both cognitively and ethically-immersing them in, and yet providing perspective on, the flawed thinking and behavior of the traumatized and revealing how the psychology of fear can be a driving force for individuals as well as for society. Through this engagement, these writers enable readers to understand their own roles in systems of power and how they internalize the ideologies of those systems.

ReMIX Transitioning Your Church to Living Color
Free Download Re:MIX : Transitioning Your Church to Living Color By Mark DeYmaz; Bob Whitesel
2016 | 83 Pages | ISBN: 1630886920 | EPUB | 1 MB
re: MIX: Transitioning Your Church to Living Color is a practical guide for pastors, denominational leaders, and lay leaders who are seeking to transition their monoethnic congregations into healthy multiethnic churches of Christ-centered faith. The book is theologically sound, cross-culturally relevant, and based on field research. It provides transferrable lessons and practices that are applicable in a variety of local church and denominational contexts. Authors Mark DeYmaz and Bob Whitesel demonstrate that such transitions are not just timely or optional. Indeed, these biblically grounded transitions are necessary for churches pursuing growth and health in an increasingly diverse society. By becoming a church of living color, existing or declining churches present a more credible witness of God's love for all people and can achieve renewed significance and sustainability. re: MIX is full of instructive, immediately useful information in a clear and easy-to-use format and includes sidebar stories from church leaders in a variety of denominations who have transitioned their congregations to living color. "Wow This is the practical tool for the church that I have been waiting for. Pentecost didn't occur until the diversity of 'every nation under heaven' was present. This book will become recommended reading for all of my seminary students." --Mike Slaughter, pastor, author, speaker, and activist

Re-Visioning Terrorism A Humanistic Perspective
Free Download Re-Visioning Terrorism : A Humanistic Perspective By Elena Coda; Ben Lawton
2016 | 341 Pages | ISBN: 155753733X | EPUB | 1 MB
Re-Visioning Terrorism: A Humanistic Perspective is an interdisciplinary collection of essays that aims to offer a plurality of visions on terrorism, expanding its meaning across time and space and raising new questions that explore its multifaceted occurrences. The different ideological, philosophical, and cultural perspectives emerging from the essays and the variety of humanistic disciplines involved intend to provide a complex and even contradictory picture that emphasizes the fact that there cannot be a univocal conception and response to terrorism, in either the practical or the intellectual domain. The editors borrow the concept of rack focus response from cinema to create an innovative and flexible interpretative approach to terrorism. Rack focus refers to the change of focus of a lens so that one image can come into focus while another moves out of focus. Though the focal distance changes, the reality has not changed. Both items and events coexist, but given the nature of optics we can only see clearly one or the other. This occurs not just with lenses, but also with human perceptions, be they emotional or intellectual. The rack focus response requires that we try to shift focus from the depth of field that is absolutely clear and familiar to the "other" that is unclear and unfamiliar. This exercise will lead us to reflect on terroristic events in a more nuanced, nondogmatic, and flexible manner. The essays featured in this volume range from philosophical interpretations of terrorism, to historical analysis of terror through the ages, to cinematic, artistic, and narrative representations of terroristic events that are not limited to 9/11.

Re-Thinking Mobility Contemporary Sociology
Free Download Re-Thinking Mobility : Contemporary Sociology By Vincent Kaufmann; Professor Margaret Grieco
2003 | 119 Pages | ISBN: 0754618420 | EPUB | 1 MB
All too often, mobility is evoked as a preferred indicator in explanations of space-time compression and its impact. However, in failing to clearly distinguish speed potentials from their use, such analyses veer towards technological determinism, or else towards the normative domain. In order to avoid this trap, the motivations underlying mobility must be explored. This groundbreaking examination is carried out through a discussion of the following general question: to what extent can the speed potentials generated by technological transportation systems be considered as vectors of social change? It also provides an opportunity to study in greater depth the little-known field of the sociology of mobility. Following an examination of the existing controversies surrounding social fluidification, it proposes to rethink mobility using the new concept of motility. Current contributions to and research results in this new area are included and the book indicates possible new research directions, opening the way to a new form of general sociology.

2016 | 208 Pages | ISBN: 0889774404 | EPUB | 1 MB
In the last few decades, China has undergone drastic changes, from a secluded Communist state to an active participant in the global economy. At the same time, the West's fascination with China has ascended to new heights. Leilei Chen's Re-Orienting China: Travel Writing and Cross-Cultural Understanding guides us through six rarely studies writers on post-1949 China: Jan Wong, Jock T. Wilson, Peter Hessler, Leslie T. Chang, Hill Gates, and Yi-Fu Tuan. At moments personal and intimate, Re-Orienting China guides us towards cross-cultural relationships that are critical in today's globalized world.
