All Men Become Brothers A Day in the Life of Father Nguyen Van Ly
Free Download All Men Become Brothers : A Day in the Life of Father Nguyen Van Ly By Koenraad De Wolf
2016 | 150 Pages | ISBN: 1498289525 | EPUB | 1 MB
December 8, 2011. The dissident Vietnamese priest Nguyen Van Ly (age sixty-four) is deported from a rest home in the Archdiocese Hue to the concentration camp Nam Ha in the north of the country. Van Ly, who is half paralyzed after having suffered four strokes, still faces five years in prison for his peaceable struggle against the totalitarian communist regime--a peaceable struggle he has waged for nearly forty years. We follow Father Ly, a nurse, and his guards through the twenty-four hour ordeal of getting from Hue to Nam Ha via ambulance. Arranged according to the liturgy of the hours, each chapter offers a glimpse into the life of Father Ly. This hagiographic journey, here placed in its context of Advent, offers hope for captive and oppressor. And it is hope especially that makes Father Ly realize his life's struggle for religious freedom is not in vain. Indeed, as a goodwill gesture before President Obama's visit to Vietnam, Father Ly will later be released on May 20, 2016.

Alexander Hamilton From Obscurity to Greatness
Free Download Alexander Hamilton : From Obscurity to Greatness By John P. Kaminski
2016 | 245 Pages | ISBN: 0870208039 | EPUB | 1 MB
Born in 1755 on a small Caribbean island to unmarried parents, Alexander Hamilton did not enjoy the privileges of wealth or heredity by which so many of his contemporaries advanced to the highest levels of power. Yet Hamilton's natural ability and ambition earned him prevailing influence in the American Revolution and the government created thereafter, eventually securing his place in the pantheon of America's founders. Editor John P. Kaminski has gathered a remarkable collection of quotations by and about Alexander Hamilton that paint for us a nuanced portrait of a complex man. Through his own words and the words of his contemporaries -- including the man who killed him in a duel, Aaron Burr -- we can gain a better understanding of this fascinating man who rose from anonymity on a small Caribbean island to the corridors of power.

Aldous Huxley The Political Thought of a Man of Letters
Free Download Aldous Huxley : The Political Thought of a Man of Letters By Alessandro Maurini
2017 | 193 Pages | ISBN: 1498513778 | EPUB | 1 MB
Aldous Huxley: The Political Thought of a Man of Letters argues that Huxley is not a man of letters engaged in politics, but a political thinker who chooses literature to spread his ideas. His preference for the dystopian genre is due to his belief in the tremendous impact of dystopia on twentieth-century political thought. His political thinking is not systematic, but this does not stop his analysis from supplying elements that are original and up-to-date, and that represent fascinating contributions of political theory in all the spheres that he examines from anti-Marxism to anti-positivism, from political realism to elitism, from criticism of mass society to criticism of totalitarianism, from criticism of ideologies to the future of liberal democracy, from pacifism to ecological communitarianism. Huxley clearly grasped the unsolved issues of contemporary liberalism, and the importance of his influence on many twentieth-century and present-day political thinkers ensures that his ideas remain indispensable in the current liberal-democratic debate. Brave New World is without doubt Huxley's most successful political manifesto. While examining the impassioned struggle for the development of all human potentialities, it yet manages not to close the doors definitively on the rebirth of utopia in the age of dystopia.

This volume features three scientists, centered around the work ofGerman-born physicist Albert Einstein, who created revolutionarytheories of physics during the early 1900's that transformed ourunderstanding of nature and led to countless technologicalbreakthroughs. Einstein's theories expanded on the classicalfoundation of physics laid in the late 1600's by the English scientistIsaac Newton, whose profile precedes Einstein's biography in thisvolume. The American physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer built uponEinstein's work in the realms of both scientific theory andtechnology. During the 1930's and 1940's, Oppenheimer usedconcepts from Einstein's theories of relativity to predict the existenceof black holes and to lead a project that developed the first atomicbomb. Black holes are invisible regions of space in which thegravitational force is so strong that not even light can escape fromthem. Oppenheimer's profile follows Einstein's biography in thisvolume.

Aiming High Progressive Politics in a High-Risk, High-Opportunity Era
Free Download Aiming High : Progressive Politics in a High-Risk, High-Opportunity Era By Florian Ranft
2016 | 189 Pages | ISBN: 1786600994 | EPUB | 1 MB
Progressive politics finds itself in an incredibly testing era. The accelerating economic, social and political shifts put vast pressure on progressive movements. Being electorally challenged by the conservative right and the radical left they struggle to appeal to voters or bear the fruits of their time in government. The coming decades offer both great opportunities - the chance for entrepreneurs to develop new, efficient and innovative businesses creating jobs, economic growth and high returns on investment - and high risks, especially for unskilled workers from traditional industries and routine services, placing significant strains on existing social security systems. The centre left imperatively needs to develop a progressive policy offer and narrative that puts social modernisation and a positive vision of the innovation economy at the centre. This special Policy Network volume offers fresh analyses and reform proposals for the centre left in Europe and worldwide. It brings together a wide array of authors and ideas focusing on institutional change, new policies and political narratives to meet the challenges of progressive governance in a high-opportunity, high-risk era.

Aging in Today's World Conversations Between an Anthropologist and a Physician
Free Download Aging in Today's World : Conversations Between an Anthropologist and a Physician By Renée Rose Shield; Stanley M. Aronson; Renée Rose Shield
2003 | 256 Pages | ISBN: 1571814205 | PDF | 1 MB
Never before in human existence have the aged been so numerous - and for the most part - healthy. In this important new book, two professionals, an anthropologist and a physician, wrestle with the complex subject of aging. Is it inevitable? Is it a burden or gift? What is successful aging? Why are some people better at aging than others? Where is aging located? How does it vary among individuals, within and between groups, cultures, societies, and indeed, over the centuries? Reflecting on these and other questions, the authors comment on the impact age has in their lives and work. Two unique viewpoints are presented. While medicine approaches aging with special attention given to the body, its organs, and its functions over time, anthropology focuses on how the aged live within their cultural settings. As this volume makes clear, the two disciplines have a great deal to teach each other, and in a spirited exchange, the authors show how professional barriers can be surmounted. In a novel approach, each author explores a different aspect of aging in alternating chapters. These chapters are in turn followed by a commentary by the other. Further, the authors interrupt each other within the chapters - to raise questions, contradict, ask for clarification, and explore related ideas - with these interjections emphasizing the dynamic nature of their ideas about age. Finally, a third "voice" - that of a random old man - periodically inserts itself into the text to remind the authors of their necessarily limited understanding of the subject.

Aging Masculinity in the American Novel
Free Download Aging Masculinity in the American Novel By Alex Hobbs
2016 | 197 Pages | ISBN: 1442266783 | EPUB | 1 MB
As each generation confronts aging and responds to its challenges, the literary community-ranging from Philip Roth to Jonathan Franzen-has provided nuanced and thoughtful depictions that transcend stereotypes of old men as feeble and broken individuals. Under the sage guidance of these authors-many facing old age themselves-older male characters have become increasingly prevalent in literary fiction. In Aging Masculinity in the American Novel, Alex Hobbs turns the spotlight on matters related to later life by examining a broad range of works. Hobbs looks at novels not only by literary lions of the Baby Boom generation, but authors on the cusp of old age who anticipate its consequences. In addition to works by Jonathan Franzen, Paul Auster, and Ethan Canin, the author considers the perspectives of female writers, such as Marilynne Robinson, Anne Tyler, and Jane Smiley, who have created complex older male characters. Hobbs argues that previous studies regarding male aging in popular culture have been reductive, and she suggests that male and female experiences and interpretations of aging are individualistic and unique. With a bold argument for how readers should contemplate masculinity in literary fiction, this book helps us better understand the full range of issues that older men face-from legacy and loss to health issues and grace. The author's illuminating and persuasive perspectives will ignite a new way of thinking about this subject and its central place in the national conversation. Looking at how older men's lives are documented in American fiction, Aging Masculinity in the American Novel will be of interest to scholars and students of popular culture, gender studies, aging studies, and literature.
