Free Download Elizabeth Edwards, "Raw Histories: Photographs, Anthropology and Museums"
English | ISBN: 1859734979 | 2001 | 284 pages | PDF | 22 MB
Photographs have had an integral and complex role in many anthropological contexts, from fieldwork to museum exhibitions. This book explores how approaching anthropological photographs as 'history' can offer both theoretical and empirical insights into these roles. Photographs are thought to make problematic history because of their ambiguity and 'rawness'. In short, they have too many meanings. The author refutes this prejudice by exploring, through a series of case studies, precisely the potential of this raw quality to open up new perspectives. Taking the nature of photography as her starting point, the author argues that photographs are not merely pictures of things but are part of a dynamic and fluid historical dialogue, which is active not only in the creation of the photograph but in its subsequent social biography in archive and museum spaces, past and present. In this context, the book challenges any uniform view of anthropological photography and its resulting archives. Drawing on a variety of examples, largely from the Pacific, the book demonstrates how close readings of photographs reveal not only western agendas, but also many layers of differing historical and cross-cultural experiences. That is, photographs can 'spring leaks' to show an alternative viewpoint. These themes are developed further by examining the dynamics of photographs and issues around them as used by contemporary artists and curators and presented to an increasingly varied public. This book convincingly demonstrates photographs' potential to articulate histories other than those of their immediate appearances, a potential that can no longer be neglected by scholars and institutions.

Free Download Robert L. Hampel, "Radical Teaching in Turbulent Times: Martin Duberman's Princeton Seminars, 1966-1970 "
English | ISBN: 3030770583 | 2021 | 250 pages | EPUB | 6 MB
From 1966 to 1970, historian Martin Duberman transformed his undergraduate Princeton seminar on American radicalism. This book looks closely at the seminar, drawing on interviews with former students and colleagues, conversations with Duberman, and abundant archival material in the Princeton archives and the Duberman Papers. The array of evidence makes the book a primer on how historians gather and interpret evidence while at the same time shining light on the tumultuous late 1960s in American higher education. This book will become a tool for teaching, inspiring educators to rethink the ways in which history is taught and teaching students how to reason historically through sources.

Free Download Sibaji Pratim Basu, "Rabindranath Tagore's Axiology of Politics"
English | ISBN: 9819794633 | 2024 | 215 pages | EPUB | 982 KB
This book revisits Rabindranath Tagore's opinion and standpoints on constituent elements of politics from the stance of this marker--axiology, so that many well-known aspects of his thought may be seen in a different light. Among the Indian luminaries of the first half of the twentieth century, who were well-known both in the East and the West, Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) was arguably the most 'gifted' personality. Besides being the first non-European recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature (1913) and the 'ambassador' of Indian culture to the West, he also wrote voluminous essays and letters on socio-political issues--engaged himself in various protests against the raj, as a pacifist in international arena and also as a polemical writer. Tagore is often described as the 'conscience' of the Indian nation.
