The New Opera del Duomo Museum
Free Download Timothy Verdon, "The New Opera del Duomo Museum"
English | ISBN: 8874612680 | 2024 | 147 pages | PDF | 69 MB
The expansion ofthe Museo dell'Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore in 2013-15 was an opportunity to rethink the general role played by the Cathedral Foundation in promoting and preserving the monuments it oversees: the Baptistery of San Giovanni, the Cathedral or Duomo of Santa Maria del Fiore, and Giotto's Bell Tower. The decidedly narrative approach of the museum's new installation project suggested the need to 'narrate' the churches to which the works in the museum refer, and thus to consider the entire monumental complex of Piazza del Duomo an enormous museum, providing visitors with interpretative instruments that can offer insight into its main contents and stylistic elements. This comprehensive

The New Elizabethan Age Culture, Society and National Identity after World War II
Free Download Irene Morra, "The New Elizabethan Age: Culture, Society and National Identity after World War II "
English | ISBN: 1784531790 | 2016 | 360 pages | PDF | 5 MB
In the first half of the twentieth century, many writers and artists turnedto the art and received example of the Elizabethans as a means ofarticulating an emphatic (and anti-Victorian) modernity. By the middleof that century, this cultural neo-Elizabethanism had become absorbedwithin a broader mainstream discourse of national identity, heritage andcultural performance. Taking strength from the Coronation of a new, youngQueen named Elizabeth, the New Elizabethanism of the 1950s heralded anation that would now see its 'modern', televised monarch preside over animminently glorious and artistic age. This book provides the first in-depth investigation of New Elizabethanismand its legacy. With contributions from leading cultural practitioners andscholars, its essays explore New Elizabethanism as variously manifestin ballet and opera, the Coronation broadcast and festivities, nationalhistoriography and myth, the idea of the 'Young Elizabethan', celebrations ofair travel and new technologies, and the New Shakespeareanism of theatreand television. As these essays expose, New Elizabethanism was muchmore than a brief moment of optimistic hyperbole.

The Narrative of the Caucasian Schism Memory and Forgetting in Medieval Caucasia
Free Download N Aleksidze, "The Narrative of the Caucasian Schism: Memory and Forgetting in Medieval Caucasia "
English | ISBN: 9042936061 | 2018 | 268 pages | PDF | 88 MB
In the early seventh century, the Georgian and the Armenian Churches separated. Since then, the two nations formed their distinct Christian cultures and national Churches. This also resulted in mutual antagonism, the repercussions of which are still observable in modern Caucasia - This is the prevalent narrative that one encounters in modern histories of medieval Caucasia. In the centre of this narrative lies the Schism - a watershed that divides the history of Caucasia into two chronological constituents, the era before and after. Indeed, the Schism is allegedly one of the most well documented events in Caucasian history, infinitely evoked and referred to in medieval Armenian historical accounts. The present study is an attempt to deconstruct this grand narrative by focusing on the formation of the narrative of the Schism, its central element. It argues that the narrative of the Schism was perpetually reconstructed and reinvented by medieval historians for the purpose of sustaining teleological continuity in their perception of the region's history. In the historical imaginaries of different medieval writers in different times and places, the Schism served as an interpretive tool in attempts to create a sound connection between the present and the forgotten past. The Schism was once again reinvented in contemporary Armenian and Georgia national discourses, and thence has made its way into scholarly studies.

The Monodromy Group (2nd Edition)
Free Download The Monodromy Group
English | 2025 | ISBN: 3031912691 | 693 Pages | PDF | 11 MB
This book presents the monodromy group, underlining the unifying role it plays in a variety of theories and mathematical areas. In singularity theory and algebraic geometry, the monodromy group is embodied in the Picard-Lefschetz formula and the Picard-Fuchs equations. It has applications in the weakened 16th Hilbert problem and in mixed Hodge structures. In the theory of systems of linear differential equations, one has the Riemann-Hilbert problem, the Stokes phenomena and the hypergeometric functions with their multidimensional generalizations. In the theory of homomorphic foliations, there appear the Ecalle-Voronin-Martinet-Ramis moduli. Moreover, there is a deep connection of monodromy theory with Galois theory of differential equations and algebraic functions.

The Modernity of Ancient Sculpture Greek Sculpture and Modern Art from Winckelmann to Picasso
Free Download Elizabeth Prettejohn, "The Modernity of Ancient Sculpture: Greek Sculpture and Modern Art from Winckelmann to Picasso "
English | ISBN: 1848859023 | 2012 | 320 pages | PDF | 17 MB
Modernism in the visual arts has been defined as a liberation from the classical inheritance. The excitement of modern art is often seen to lie in its radical break with the past. But according to one standard narrative, the modern discipline of art history began only with a study of ancient art and sculpture. Johann Joachim Winckelmann's History of the Art of Antiquity, first published in 1764, set the precedent for the historical study of the visual arts, and is still the dominant method in art history today. The modern study of art and the making of modern art thus appear to be founded on incompatible principles: the one on the centrality of ancient art; the other on its utter repudiation. Elizabeth Prettejohn's important and revisionist new book starts from an opposite premise: that the modern study of ancient art and the making of modern art are inextricably intertwined. Subjecting Winckelmann's ideas to astute yet sympathetic critique, the author uses exciting theories of reception to construct a new theory of the relationship between ancient and modern art. Relating seminal ancient artifacts (such as Laocoon, the Parthenon Marbles and Venus de Milo) to modern interpretations by the likes of Alma-Tadema, Leighton, Rodin and Picasso, The Modernity of Ancient Sculpture will have strong appeal to students of art history and classics alike.

The Modern Stephen King Canon Beyond Horror
Free Download Philip L. Simpson, "The Modern Stephen King Canon: Beyond Horror"
English | ISBN: 1498572782 | 2018 | 270 pages | EPUB | 479 KB
The Modern Stephen King Canon: Beyond Horror is a collection of essays focused on the more recent writings of Stephen King, including Revival, 11/22/63, and a selection of short stories by the "Master of the Macabre." The authors write about King works that have received little critical attention and aim to open up doorways of analysis and insight that will help readers gain a stronger appreciation for the depth and detail within King's fiction. Indeed, while King is often relegated to the role of a genre writer (horror), the essays in this collection consider the merits of King's writing beyond the basics of horror for which he is primarily known. Recommended for scholars of literature, horror, and popular culture.

The Missionary and the Maharajas Cecil Tyndale-Biscoe and the Making of Modern Kashmir
Free Download Hugh Tyndale-Biscoe, "The Missionary and the Maharajas: Cecil Tyndale-Biscoe and the Making of Modern Kashmir"
English | ISBN: 1350137731 | 2019 | 360 pages | PDF | 10 MB
Cecil Tyndale-Biscoe polarised opinion in early 20th India by his unconventional methods of educating Kashmiris and, through them, changing the social order of a society steeped in old superstitions. He was a man of contradictions: a Christian and a boxer, a missionary who made very few converts, a staunch supporter of British imperialism and a friend of Kashmir's political reformers. He made enemies of the Hindu Establishment, who described him as 'exceedingly a bad man and one too much fond of cricket,' but earned the respect of two successive Hindu Maharajas, as well as the Muslim leader, who succeeded them.

The Metaphysics of Divine Participation
Free Download Alexander J. B. Hampton, "The Metaphysics of Divine Participation "
English | ISBN: 1009625047 | 2025 | 75 pages | PDF | 5 MB
Participation has been central to the story of Western philosophy and theology for at least two millennia. It has been employed to conceptualise the relationship between God and creation, between universals and particulars, and between the One and the many. This Element approaches the concept systematically to acquire an appreciation of its breadth and depth under four fundamental themes: creation and the divine ideas, incarnation and salvation, being and multiplicity, and the human activities of naming, knowing and making. In doing so it examines some of the key thinkers in the participatory tradition, including Augustine, Irenaeus, Aquinas and Nicholas of Cusa. Readers will be introduced to the key contours and manifestations of participatory metaphysics, and its role in Christianity's self-articulation. Together, these considerations will demonstrate how the metaphysics of participation has shaped the Christian tradition.
