Our Spiritual Crisis Recovering Human Wisdom in a Time of Violence
Free Download Our Spiritual Crisis : Recovering Human Wisdom in a Time of Violence By Michael Nagler; Lewis Mudge
2005 | 125 Pages | ISBN: 081269581X | EPUB | 1 MB
Many of the social, cultural, and even economic problems now faced by American society are direct results of excessive emphasis on material consumption, which in turn reflects spiritual poverty. Michael Nagler argues that these ills spring from a false way of looking at the world, based on the premise that material things are fundamental, consciousness merely derivative. He advocates a return to the ancient and Eastern-spiritual view that consciousness is fundamental. Instead of the prevailing paradigm, that the universe is matter-energy-consciousness (M-E-C), Dr. Nagler advances a conception of the universe, in line with the wisdom tradition of spiritual enlightenment, as consciousness-energy-matter (C-E-M). Consciousness is the basic stuff of the universe; matter and energy are ephemeral forms or appearances. In developing this conception and applying it to our social problems, Dr. Nagler explains how we can best oppose war, consumerism, commercialism, scientism, and the spiritual hollowness of modern life.

Organization Theory and Transnational Social Movements Organizational Life and Internal Dynamics of Power Exercise Within the
Free Download Organization Theory and Transnational Social Movements : Organizational Life and Internal Dynamics of Power Exercise Within the Alternative Globalization Movement By Kleber Bertrand Ghimire; Kl Ber Ghimire; Kleber Ghimire
2011 | 126 Pages | ISBN: 0739165577 | EPUB | 1 MB
Placing it within the theoretical perspectives and debates in Organizational Theory (OT), this book explores the organizational design and internal functioning of a rather emblematic and widely acclaimed transnational social organization: the alternative globalization movement (previously anti-globalization movement). The issue of power in particular remains the central feature of the book. Based on a detailed study of two of the movement's essential constituents (transnational campaigns and the World Social Forum), the book examines the complexity in which certain forms of internal relations or mechanisms of power emerge. In other words, how is the organizational hierarchy conceived and how are important responsibilities executed? What are the principal modes of authority and control? What are the priorities and motives of the leading individuals and groups within the movement? Furthermore, what makes certain echelons, groups, or individuals wield more influence and authority than others, and also justify their legitimacy through diverse means? These questions are especially valid owing to the movement's proper interpretation of power which considers the concentration of power as totally unacceptable. The movement draws lessons from the history of social changes to suggest that political parties and labour movements tended to give rise to the seizure of power by a few, a heavy bureaucracy, and the lack of transparency. Logically, then, a new organizational vision should emerge, avoiding hierarchies and encouraging a more diffused process of power sharing. However, an informal manner of functioning has instead created many ambiguities, with new sets of interests and power relations gradually becoming manifest within the movement. All carefully considered, the book draws three principal conclusions: first, an informal organization structure does not mean that there is an absence of power; second, the exercise of power takes place while denying it; and third, there is seemingly a lack of internal resistanc

Ordinary Lives and Grand Schemes An Anthropology of Everyday Religion
Free Download Ordinary Lives and Grand Schemes: An Anthropology of Everyday Religion By Samuli Schielke (editor); Liza Debevec (editor)
2012 | 174 Pages | ISBN: 0857455079 | PDF | 1 MB
Everyday practice of religion is complex in its nature, ambivalent and at times contradictory. The task of an anthropology of religious practice is therefore precisely to see how people navigate and make sense of that complexity, and what the significance of religious beliefs and practices in a given setting can be. Rather than putting everyday practice and normative doctrine on different analytical planes, the authors argue that the articulation of religious doctrine is also an everyday practice and must be understood as such.

Onomastics between Sacred and Profane
Free Download Oliviu Felecan, "Onomastics between Sacred and Profane "
English | ISBN: 1622734017 | 2018 | 440 pages | PDF | 8 MB
Religiously, God is the creator of everything seen and unseen; thus, one can ascribe to Him the names of His creation as well, at least in their primordial form. In the mentality of ancient Semitic peoples, naming a place or a person meant determining the role or fate of the named entity, as names were considered to be mysteriously connected with the reality they designated. Subsequently, God gave people the freedom to name persons, objects, and places. However, people carried out this act (precisely) in relation to the divinity, either by remaining devoted to the sacred or by growing estranged from it, an attitude that generated profane names. The sacred/profane dichotomy occurs in all the branches of onomastics, such as anthroponymy, toponymy, and ergonymy. It is circumscribed to complex and interdisciplinary analysis which does not rely on language sciences exclusively, but also on theology, ethnology, sociology, psychology, philosophy, anthropology, geography, history and other connected fields, as well as culture in general.

On the Significance of Religion in Climate Change (Religion Matters)
Free Download On the Significance of Religion in Climate Change (Religion Matters) by Lan T. Chu, Amy Holmes-Tagchungdarpa, Kalzang Bhutia
English | February 13, 2025 | ISBN: 103233259X | 102 pages | PDF | 8.58 Mb
This book explores the role of religion in discussions about climate change and, particularly, the development of responses to climate change on global, state, institutional, and local levels. It considers examples of the ways that different religious traditions, including Indigenous, Muslim, Buddhist, and Christian communities, have responded to the different effects of climate change by using different methodological approaches, including political science and international relations (e.g. public opinion polls and constructivism); religious studies scholarship on climate change, including an overview of religion and ecology as a subdiscipline in religious studies; and environmental humanities approaches.

On Pyrrho and Time
Free Download Jean-Paul Martinon, "On Pyrrho and Time"
English | ISBN: 303167619X | 2024 | 253 pages | EPUB | 463 KB
Today's understanding of time remains mostly Aristotelian and Newtonian/Einsteinian: time is what has been abstracted from the mundane realities of life and reduced to its measurement. Any somatic, psychological, or other experience of time is deemed either irrelevant or secondary. The history of the attempts to provide alternatives to time as measurement is infinite, most of which focuses on understanding time as an inner-temporal phenomenon for which a subject temporalizes him or herself through remembrance, experience, or anticipation (including death). Amidst this vast field, one argument by an enigmatic figure in ancient Greek thought stands out for the way it abides by neither the conventional view that time is clock time nor that it is an inner temporal phenomenon: Aenesidemus' overlooked way of apprehending time by qualifying it as similar to air. To make sense of such an unusual statement, it is necessary to reconsider what informs such an unusual idea. Aenesidemus' teacher was Pyrrho (often dubbed the Greek Buddha) who advocated for a non-differential approach to reality, one for which nothing is fixed or stable. With this perspective in mind, Aenesidemus' idea then becomes clear: time or air knows no differentiae, whether that of the unit of measure or of the subject breathing it and sheltering from it. Both are radically unstable.

On Emerging from Hyper-Nation Saramago's Historical Trilogy
Free Download On Emerging from Hyper-Nation: Saramago's "Historical" Trilogy By Ronald W. Sousa
2015 | 296 Pages | ISBN: 1612493505 | EPUB | 1 MB
On Emerging from Hyper-Nation represents Ronald W. Sousa's attempt to answer the question, "Why do I smile on reading one of Saramago's 'historical' novels?" Why that reaction of emotional release? To answer the "smile question" the book engages in a critical mode that could be described as "discourse analysis." It combines several critical strains and relies on basic concepts from Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalysis, Adlerian psychology, and contemporary cognitive psychology for their discourse-analytical value rather than as entrées into psychoanalytical reading per se. The introductory chapter presents some of the concepts that underlie that compound analytical modality and sets out an overview of twentieth-century Portuguese social and economic history. Then, with an eye to answering the "smile question," the book reads Nobel Laureate José Saramago's three novels, Baltasar and Blimunda (1982), The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis (1984), and The History of the Siege of Lisbon (1989). Or, better, it seeks to read Sousa's own reading of the three works, since focus falls on how each novel seeks to construct both its own reading and also Sousa as its reader. The discussion brings to light a number of textual phenomena that bear upon the "smile question." Among them are that the novels invoke, often subtly, the fascist hermeneutical heritage remaining from before the revolution of 1974 as a constituent part of their communication with the reader; that they summon up historical trauma; that they function as Freudian-style "tendentious jokes"; and that, through these various invocations, they seek to constitute a postrevolutionary Portuguese subject. The reading of Sousa's reading, then, ends up being a reading of some of the cultural forces at work in postrevolutionary Portugal.
