Prediction and Causality in Econometrics and Related Topics
Prediction and Causality in Econometrics and Related Topics
English | 2022 | ISBN: 3030770931 | 691 Pages | PDF | 65 MB
This book provides the ultimate goal of economic studies to predict how the economy develops-and what will happen if we implement different policies. To be able to do that, we need to have a good understanding of what causes what in economics. Prediction and causality in economics are the main topics of this book's chapters; they use both more traditional and more innovative techniques-including quantum ideas - to make predictions about the world economy (international trade, exchange rates), about a country's economy (gross domestic product, stock index, inflation rate), and about individual enterprises, banks, and micro-finance institutions: their future performance (including the risk of bankruptcy), their stock prices, and their liquidity. Several papers study how COVID-19 has influenced the world economy.

Nomadic Narratives A History of Mobility and Identity in the Great Indian Desert
Nomadic Narratives: A History of Mobility and Identity in the Great Indian Desert By Tanuja Kothiyal
2016 | 312 Pages | ISBN: 1107080312 | PDF | 3 MB
The Thar Desert, which is today divided by an international boundary, has historically been a frontier region connecting Punjab, Multan, Sindh, Gujarat and Rajasthan. This book looks at the Desert as an historical region shaped through the mobility of its inhabitants - warriors, pastoralists, traders, ascetics and bards, often in overlapping capacities. It challenges the frames of Mughal-Rajput relationships generally employed to explore the histories of the Thar, arguing that Rajputana remains an inadequate category to explore polities located in this frontier region, where along with Rajputs, a range of groups, such as Charans, Bhils, Meenas, Soomras and Pathans controlled circulation, and with whom the Rajput states had to constantly negotiate. Sifting through a wide range of Rajasthani written and oral narratives, travelogues of British administrators, and vernacular as well as English records, the book explores long-term relationships between mobility, martiality, memory and identity in the desert expanses of the Thar.

New York Longshoremen Class and Power on the Docks
New York Longshoremen: Class and Power on the Docks By William J. Mello
2011 | 256 Pages | ISBN: 0813039770 | PDF | 9 MB
"A superb history of labor on the East Coast waterfront that may be the best account we have, not only of the industry, but of any sector of labor relations. Mello combines a thoroughly researched discussion of the behavior of elites-employers, government, and union officials-with a story of the heroic resistance of rank-and-file dockers to the best laid plans of their adversaries."-Stanley Aronowitz, author ofThe Last Good Job in AmericaBeginning in 1945 and for almost thirty years thereafter, the Port of New York was the site of intense class conflict. During this era, dockworkers fought an ongoing battle against shipping companies, local police, federal and state political authorities, and their own corrupt union leadership simultaneously. William Mello uncovers this little-known history that depicts the impact of state and local politics and political institutions on the labor movement in postwar America. This rich historical account illustrates how ordinary workers defied the combined powers of elites and sporadically imposed their will on labor relations. Interviews, meticulous examinations of newspaper accounts, official reports, rank-and-file newsletters, and oral histories establish the contours of Mello's work as he focuses his attention on the story of longshoremen's lives and struggles.

Marx's theory of the genesis of money how, why, and through what is a commodity money
Marx's theory of the genesis of money : how, why, and through what is a commodity money? By Kuruma, Samezō; Schauerte, Michael
2018 | 194 Pages | ISBN: 1608460584 | PDF | 2 MB
In this volume, the first of the author's works to be translated into English, Samezō Kuruma examines the different angles from which Marx analyses the commodity and money in the first two chapters of Capital, Vol I. Kuruma carefully explains each of the theoretical questions raised by Marx, particularly the theory of the value-form, which unravels the mystery surrounding money. The theoretical knowledge Marx gains from his analysis of the commodity is the linchpin of Capital, but he recognises that this presents the reader with the 'greatest difficulty' - just as 'beginnings are always difficult in all sciences'. Kuruma helps to ease this difficulty by making the reader clearly aware of how and why Marx poses his theoretical questions./This work includes an English translation of the full text of Kuruma's book, Kachikeitai-ron to kōkankate-ron (Theory of the Value Form and Theory of the Exchange Process) (Iwanami Shoten, 1957) and a slightly abridged version of Part I of Kahei-ron (Theory of Money) (Otsuki Shoten, 1979). It is a substantially revised edition of the English translation under the same title, Marx's Theory of the Genesis of Money, that was self-published by the translator (Outskirts Press, 2008).

Man's Dominion The Rise of Religion and the Eclipse of Women's Rights
Man's Dominion: The Rise of Religion and the Eclipse of Women's Rights By Sheila Jeffreys
2011 | 222 Pages | ISBN: 0415596742 | PDF | 1 MB
In this feminist critique of the politics of religion, Sheila Jeffreys argues that the renewed rise of religion is harmful to women's human rights. The book seeks to rekindle the criticism of religion as the founding ideology of patriarchy.Focusing on the three monotheistic religions; Judaism, Christianity and Islam, this book examines common anti-women attitudes such as 'male-headship', impurity of women, the need to control women's bodies, and their modern manifestations in multicultural Western states. It points to the incorporation of religious law into legal systems, faith schools, and campaigns led by Christian and Islamic organisations against women's rights at the U.N., and explains how religious rights threaten to subvert women's rights. Including highly-topical chapters on the burka and the covering of women, and polygamy, this text questions the ideology of multiculturalism which shields religion from criticism by demanding respect for culture and faith, whilst ignoring the harm that women suffer from religion.Man's Dominionis an incisive and polemic text that will be of interest to students of gender studies, religion, and politics.
