General-purpose Type 1s were being delivered elsewhere but WR management regarded these as too expensive for their requirements. After completion of design work on the 'Western' locomotives, Swindon turned to creating a cheap 'no-frills' Type 1. At 65% of the cost of the Bo-Bo alternative, the Swindon 0-6-0 represented a better 'fit' for the trip-freight niche. Since 1957 the privatized road-haulage industry had decimated BR's wagon-load sector; whilst the 1962 Transport Act released BR from its financially-debilitating public-service obligations, the damage had been done, and the 1963 Beeching Plan focused on closing unprofitable routes and associated services. By 1963 the original requirement for 400 Type 1s had been massively reduced. Fifty-six locomotives were constructed in 1964/65. Continuing traffic losses resulted in the whole class becoming redundant by 1969. Fortuitously, a demand for high-powered diesels on the larger industrial railway systems saw the bulk of the locomotives finding useful employment for a further twenty years. This book covers the life of these locomotives on British Railways; a companion volume will provide an extensive appraisal of "Their Life in Industry" for the forty-eight locomotives which made the successful transition after withdrawal from BR. Straightforward explanation is supplemented by invaluable checklists and templates. Featuring crucial advice on administering construction contracts, it references the new RIBA/BIID Professional Services Contract 2020 for interior design services. Reflecting the RIBA Plan of Work 2020 and contemporary working practice, it provides a systematic operational framework that can be applied to all types of projects. Comprehensive in scope with a logical structure, it embraces the theme of collaboration within the project team. It also addresses the issues of designing sustainability and the designer's role beyond the construction contract including how to manage the sourcing and installation of FF&E packages. Suitable for projects within any industry sector and practice type – from large international firms to sole practitioners – it is accessible to designers with different levels of experience. Traditionally, people construct domain-specific taxonomies by extensive manual curations, which is time-consuming and costly. In today's information era, people are inundated with the vast amounts of text data. Despite their usefulness, people haven't yet exploited the full power of taxonomies due to the heavy curation needed for creating and maintaining them. To bridge this gap, the authors discuss automated taxonomy discovery and exploration, with an emphasis on label-efficient machine learning methods and their real-world usages. Taxonomy organizes entities and concepts in a hierarchy way. It is ubiquitous in our daily life, ranging from product taxonomies used by online retailers, topic taxonomies deployed by news outlets and social media, as well as scientific taxonomies deployed by digital libraries across various domains. When properly analyzed, these taxonomies can play a vital role for science, engineering, business intelligence, policy design, e-commerce, and more. Intuitive examples are used throughout enabling readers to grasp concepts more easily. Defined as fast-firing high-velocity automatic guns with calibres between 20mm and about 57mm, have been an integral part of the world's militaries for well over a century. A brief history of their development is given, followed by sections examining the basic principles of gun and ammunition design, including various unconventional systems. Next comes a survey of cartridges in calibre order, from 20mm to 57mm, including not only ammunition that has seen service, but also a wide range of experimental types. Finally there is a survey of the cannon, grouped by nationality, which again includes many experimental models. In this book, Peter Vermeulen investigates new findings on the predictive brain and what these insights mean for autism and current interventions. Recent research has shown that the classic ideas about how the human brain first needs to process incoming information about the world before it can react are no longer tenable. Rather, to survive in the volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous environment of modern society, what we need is a brain that predicts the world quickly and unconsciously, while taking proper account of the context. This book explains the new theories relating to the predictive brain, summarising some of the more recent highly technical research studies about the predictive mind and autism into as accessible and understandable language as possible. Shedding new light on the predictive brain and its relation to autism, the chapters lead readers to the inevitable conclusion that many of the current interventions used in connection with autism urgently need updating and outline possibilities for revising. |
