Citizenship and Identity in Turkey From Atatürk's Republic to the Present Day
Basak Ince, "Citizenship and Identity in Turkey: From Atatürk's Republic to the Present Day"
English | 2012 | ISBN: 1780760264 | PDF | pages: 304 | 2.6 mb
Is Turkish nationalism simply a product of Kemalist propaganda from the early Turkish Republic or an inevitable consequence of a firm and developing 'Turkish' identity? How do the politics of nationalism and identity limit Turkey's progression towards a fuller, more institutionalised democracy? Turkish citizenship is a vital aspect of today's Republic, and yet it has long been defined only through legal framework, neglecting its civil, political, and social implications. Here, Basak Ince seeks to rectify this, examining the identity facets of citizenship, and how this relates to nationalism, democracy and political participation in the modern Turkish republic. By tracing the development of the citizenship from the initial founding of the Republic to the immediate post-World War II period, and from the military interventions of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s to the present day, she offers in-depth analysis of the interaction of state and society in modern Turkey, which holds wider implications for the study of the Middle East.

Cinema as a Worldbuilding Machine in the Digital Era Essay on Multiverse Films and TV Series
Alain Boillat, "Cinema as a Worldbuilding Machine in the Digital Era: Essay on Multiverse Films and TV Series"
English | ISBN: 0861967496 | 2022 | 350 pages | PDF | 16 MB
This essay examines the primacy of worldbuilding in the age of CGI, transmedia practices and "high concept" fiction by studying the principles that govern the creation of a multiverse in a wide range of film and TV productions. Emphasis is placed on Hollywood sci-fi movies and their on-screen representation of imaginary machines that mirror the film medium, following in the tradition of Philip K. Dick's writings and the cyberpunk culture. A typology of worlds is established, as well as a number of analytical tools for assessing the impact of the coexistence of two or more worlds on the narrative structure, the style (uses of color, editing practices), the generic affiliation (or hybridity), the seriality and the discourse produced by a given film (particularly in fictions linked to post-9/11 fantasies). Among the various titles examined, the reader is offered a detailed analysis of the Resident Evil film series, Total Recall and its remake, Dark City, the Matrix trilogy, Avatar, Source Code and other time-loop films, TRON and its sequel, Christopher Nolan's Tenet, and several TV shows - most notably HBO's Westworld, but also Sliders, Lost, Fringe and Counterpart.

Chinese Naval Strategy in the 21st Century The Turn to Mahan
Chinese Naval Strategy in the 21st Century: The Turn to Mahan By James R. Holmes, Toshi Yoshihara
2007 | 192 Pages | ISBN: 0415772133 | PDF | 5 MB
Alfred Thayer Mahan has been called America's nineteenth-century 'evangelist of sea power' and the intellectual father of the modern US Navy. His theories have a timeless appeal, and Chinese analysts now routinely invoke Mahan's writings, exhorting their nation to build a powerful navy. Economics is the prime motivation for maritime reorientation, and securing the sea lanes that convey foreign energy supplies and other commodities now ranks near or at the top of China's list of military priorities. This book is the first systematic effort to test the interplay between Western military thought and Chinese strategic traditions vis-à-vis the nautical arena. It uncovers some universal axioms about how theories of sea power influence the behaviour of great powers and examines how Mahanian thought could shape China's encounters on the high seas. Empirical analysis adds a new dimension to the current debate over China's 'rise' and its importance for international relations. The findings also clarify the possible implications of China's maritime rise for the United States, and illuminate how the two powers can manage their bilateral interactions on the high seas. Chinese Naval Strategy in the 21st Century will be of much interest to students of naval history, Chinese politics and security studies.

Charles E. Callwell and the British Way in Warfare
Daniel Whittingham, "Charles E. Callwell and the British Way in Warfare "
English | ISBN: 1108480071 | 2020 | 286 pages | PDF | 4 MB
Daniel Whittingham presents the first full-length study of one of Britain's most important military thinkers, Major-General Sir Charles E. Callwell (1859-1928). It tells the story of his life, which included service in military intelligence, the South African War, and on the General Staff before and during the First World War. It also presents the first comprehensive analysis of his writing: from his well-known books Small Wars (1896) and Military Operations and Maritime Preponderance (1905), to a host of other books and articles that are presented here for the first time. Through a study of Callwell's life and works, this book offers a new perspective on the nature and study of military history, the character of British strategy, and on the army to which he belonged.

Cesarean Section Indications and Technique
Cesarean Section: Indications and Technique by Akmal El-Mazny
English | July 1, 2018 | ISBN: 1548409170 | 80 pages | EPUB | 0.35 Mb
Cesarean section (CS) is defined as the delivery of a fetus through surgical incisions made through the abdominal wall (laparotomy) and the uterine wall (hysterotomy). Currently, CS is performed for a variety of maternal indications, fetal indications, or both; the leading indications are previous CS, breech presentation, dystocia, and fetal distress. The steps for CS includes preoperative preparation, operative procedure (laparotomy, hysterotomy, fetal delivery, uterine repair, and abdominal closure), and postoperative care. Major sources of morbidity and mortality with CS can be related to sequelae of surgical injury, anesthetic complications, infection, and thromboembolic disease. Decreasing the rate of primary CS and increased implementation of vaginal birth after CS are important steps of a larger movement towards decreasing the overall rate of CS. This book provides a comprehensive review of CS, emphasizing its indications and technique, which will be of immense value for obstetricians and allied health professionals.
