This edited volume collects papers presented at the 16th International Conference on the Evolution of Language (EVOLANG XVI) that took place in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, April 7-10, 2026, in the year that marks the 30th anniversary of the EVOLANG conference series, which started out in Edinburgh in 1996. As such, the Plovdiv conference continues a long-standing tradition. At the time of the very first EVOLANG 30 years ago, language evolution research was arguably more of a niche enterprise. However, over the last three decades, it has evolved into a thriving field of research with an own journal (Journal of Language Evolution published by Oxford University Press), several textbooks in multiple languages, and two relevant handbooks. One reason for this success is certainly the vast interdisciplinarity of the field that also characterizes the contributions to the present volume. From classic artificial language learning studies to agent-based modelling approaches, from comparative studies to archaeological evidence, from contributions focusing on fully-fledged human language to others investigating symbolic communication more broadly, the contributions to EVOLANG XVI reflect the wealth and breadth of current research in evolutionary linguistics.
