The Tale of Igor's Campaign English Translation and Early Slavic Faith Commentary

When Prince Igor Svyatoslavich led his army against the Polovtsian nomads in 1185, the campaign ended in catastrophe. But an unknown bard saw something more in this defeat and created one of the oldest surviving poems in Slavic literature.
"The Tale of Igor's Campaign" (also known as "The Lay of Igor's Campaign" or "The Song of Igor's Campaign") transforms military disaster into an epic meditation on ambition, honor, and the brutal costs of war. Written in Old East Slavic during the late 12th century, it captures Kievan Rus' at a moment of crisis: feuding princes, constant raids from nomadic peoples, and political chaos that would eventually contribute to the Mongol conquest.
The manuscript itself barely survived. Found in a Yaroslavl monastery in 1795 by collector Aleksei Musin-Pushkin, the original burned during Napoleon's 1812 occupation of Moscow. Only copies made before the fire preserved the text, leading to persistent debates about its authenticity and origins.
This edition focuses on what other translations overlook: the poem's deep connections to pre-Christian Slavic religion. Perun Mountain's translation from the 1800s Old Russian text includes extensive commentary revealing how pagan beliefs persisted beneath the Christian surface of Kievan Rus' culture. The notes explain references to gods like Perun (thunder), Veles (underworld), Dazhbog (sun), and Stribog (wind), plus figures like the dragon deity Troyan and the prophetic bard Boyan.
The translation preserves the original meter, rhyme schemes, and alliteration while making the text accessible. Perfect for students of medieval literature, Slavic history, Rodnovery practitioners, and anyone fascinated by how epic poetry captures the collision between old and new faiths.
