Stop memorizing SQL. Start thinking in SQL.Most beginners learn SQL syntax and still freeze in front of a real business question: "What percentage of customers came back to buy again within 90 days?" This book teaches the thinking behind the queries — and then opens the database up so you can see why a query is fast or slow. You join MetroMart, a fast-growing nationwide e-commerce marketplace, as its first data hire. Every chapter brings a new question from the CEO, the accountant, operations, or marketing. You answer them on a realistic, normalized 17-table database with 20,000 orders — the same one from the first page to the last. What makes this book different:No prior knowledge assumed. Every new concept comes with an everyday analogy, a diagram, a precise definition, and a query you run yourself.Picture first, syntax second. 58 diagrams designed to be crystal clear even on a black-and-white Kindle.50 auto-graded exercises in three levels (Easy, Medium, Hard), with step-by-step solutions and thinking breakdown.Real internals, hands-on. 8KB pages, B-tree indexes, the query planner, hash and merge joins, WAL, MVCC, and deadlocks.Who this book is for: Students, aspiring data analysts, business professionals, and developers who want to truly understand SQL — not just memorize syntax.Free companion resources: a one-command Docker PostgreSQL setup, full dataset, exercises, and auto-grader available on GitHub.
