Flying Through Fire

This review examines the state of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) survivability in explosive blast environments through a comprehensive analysis of field blast testing methodologies. The paper outlines key design principles for explosive charge placement, safe standoff distances, and shockwave measurement calibration, drawing on recent experimental protocols. Instrumentation strategies including pressure sensors, accelerometers, and onboard data acquisition systems are evaluated for their role in assessing structural response and flight stability. Safety protocols, regulatory compliance, and risk mitigation frameworks critical to conducting controlled blast tests are discussed in detail. Analytical frameworks integrating numerical simulations and empirical data inform damage thresholds and survivability criteria. Emphasis is placed on standardized, repeatable testing procedures to ensure data reliability. Finally, emerging research directions such as the integration of smart sensors, AI-driven decision making, and advances in UAV resilience and explosive materials are explored. This synthesis provides a detailed overview of challenges and advances in drone blast survivability testing, offering insights for future field testing campaigns and UAV design improvements.
