Although already there is some literature about general concepts applied in electric substation design, this work intends to be the first process-oriented approach dedicated to Air-Insulated Substations in which a step-by-step design procedure and a well-structured strategy for managing substation projects are presented. Key features:-Electrical phenomena that occur in power systems are explained in a comprehensible manner.-Environmental impact of substation projects is analyzed from both standpoints: Impact of the environment on substation functionality and impact of the substation and its components on the environment.-A method to gain local community acceptance of new transmission infrastructure is proposed.-Check lists of technical characteristics for substation major components are displayed.-Technical studies required in substation projects are discussed. -Substation specification in functional modality is outlined.-A number of critical issues in project developing such as quality assurance activities, transport study for power transformers and construction inspection practices are also included.-Main concepts of IEC 61850 Standard have been incorporated.-Criteria for economic optimization in substation projects are offered.Practitioner engineers and technicians in electrical utilities, personnel of substation constructors, manufacturers of substation components and other players in the field of electric power system may adopt this publication as a useful tool to accomplish their corporative responsibilities. It can also be useful in professional training courses.
