Nuclear North Korea versus the U.S.-South Korea Threat and Options

This book examines five options for the US and South Korea: 1) Strengthening the US's current extended deterrent; 2) Preemptive strike; 3) South Korea's development of nuclear weapons; 4) Another nuclear sharing system in Northeast Asia or East Asia; and 5) Denuclearization of North Korea. Because of North Korea's success in building up its "strategic" nuclear forces, the US and South Korea cannot help but employ risky options to achieve a nuclear balance. The author argues that the risks associated with any option cannot be greater than the risks of allowing North Korea's nuclear attack on South Korea or the United States.
