A function does some computation and returns a value. We create a function because we need to use the function more than just once and likely in more than just in one program.
In PostgreSQL database you can create your own function using its procedural language called PL/pgSQL.
While SQL always processes set of rows, PL/pgSQL can process row by row. PL/pgSQL also provides procedural language capabilities, such as if-then-else and looping.
Once your function is created, you can use it in the same way as you use the built-in functions.
When you finish reading this book and trying its examples, you would have equipped yourself with the skills to create functions with PL/pgSQL programs to participate in a real-world development project.
