First published in 1965, Cicero contains a number of assessments of Cicero's life and works, made by a group of scholars that includes some of the acknowledged experts in their particular field. Cicero is a man on whom most judgments have been harsh. His political ideals, though sincerely held, were bypassed by the march of events; his public life was a series of frustrations; his personality was egotistical.
