In 1095, Pope Urban II called upon the Catholics in Europe to reclaim the Holy Land for Christianity. Expeditions from all corners of Western Europe marched through Europe, Anatolia and Palestine to answer the call and secure control of the holy sites considered sacred by both Christians and Muslims.
