The Caucasus is similar to the Alps, but higher, wilder, more untouched and exotic. In the past ten years, probably no Western European has hiked more than I in this heavenly beautiful mountain area. From magnificent mountain peaks, bulging glaciers twist down towards bright green valleys adorned with rhododendron forests and an overwhelming splendour of flowers. With ancient sledge roads and spectacular mountainsides, the Caucasus is nothing less than a hiker's dream terrain. It is still a wonderland as the Norwegian writer Knut Hamsun described it just over a hundred years ago.
