PHOTOGRAPHY: Monochrome Film in Colour Chemistry

This work explores photography as a disciplined form of thinking rather than a neutral act of recording. Drawing on reflective practice, material constraint and Ansel Adams' Zone System , it examines how intention, limitation and responsibility shape images from exposure through to public circulation. Using chromogenic black and white film (Ilford XP1) as a case study, the work argues that photographic meaning is established through anticipation and coherence rather than post hoc correction, positioning photography as an ongoing conversation between perception, material and judgement and questions Ilford Photo's disrespect of my 1983 research into XP1. In this work, I examine photographic practice as a disciplined form of thought rather than a neutral act of recording, tracing how intention, limitation and responsibility shape images from exposure through to public circulation. Drawing on my photographic education in the early 1980s, I position the Zone System, as articulated by Ansel Adams and taught to me through the pedagogical lineage of Geoff Weston, not as a technical formula but as a cognitive and ethical framework. I argue that black and white photography, and chromogenic film in particular, exposes the constructed nature of perception by forcing decisions about tone, structure and omission to become visible, deliberate and accountable. In the late twentieth century, Ilford also entered chromogenic black and white film production with XP1, bridging black and white aesthetics with colour processing chemistry. While controversial, this move reflected Ilford's willingness to explore alternative technical paths rather than treat photographic orthodoxy as fixed. This work sits at the intersection of practice, reflection and critical inquiry. It is shaped by a period in which photography required commitment to process and acceptance of consequence, and it is written from within that inheritance rather than about it from a distance. The context is not nostalgic, nor oppositional to contemporary methods, but attentive to how ways of working shape ways of thinking. What follows should be read as an exploration of continuity rather than a defence of tradition. The pages that follow are grounded in experience rather than abstraction. They are informed by years spent working through processes that required patience, foresight and acceptance of limitation. Those conditions mattered. They slowed the pace of decision making and made responsibility unavoidable. The writing reflects that tempo. It is deliberate, measured and attentive to implication rather than outcome. Photography is often approached as a means of expression, evidence or capture. This work begins elsewhere, with the assumption that photographs are shaped as much by what is withheld as by what is shown. From that starting point, the image becomes less an outcome than a consequence, formed through a sequence of decisions that carry meaning beyond the frame. The purpose of this introduction is not to summarise what follows, but to establish the conditions under which it should be read. The work that unfolds here is grounded in practice rather than prescription. It arises from prolonged engagement with materials, processes and their limits, and from an education that treated attention as a responsibility rather than a preference. Photography is considered not as a neutral tool, but as a structured activity in which judgement, anticipation and consequence are inseparable. What matters is not simply what appears in the image, but how and why it arrived there.
