Free Download Richard P. Klobuchar - The USS Ward: An Operational History of the Ship That Fired the First American Shot of World War II
McFarland & Company | 2006 | ISBN: 0786423846 | English | 288 pages | PDF | 139.13 MB
In 1940, with the threat of war in the Pacific imminent, the United States was forced to expand its fleet as quickly as possible. This included reconditioning and recommissioning "four stackers" from the navy's reserve fleet. It was here that the U.S.S. Ward came into her own, earning the distinction of firing the first shot in America's war against Japan and serving three years in combat until it was sunk - with no loss of life - on December 7, 1944. From the first confrontation at Pearl Harbor through the Ward's last mission in the Philippines, this history gives a detailed account of the life and times of the ship and her crew of 125 men, 82 of whom were naval reservists from St. Paul, Minnesota. On May 15, 1918, at Mare Island Shipyard in California, Master Shipfitter J.T. Maroney laid the keel of a hull designated simply as DD-139. In a record that still stands, Maroney had the hull ready for launching in only 17 days instead of the four months usually required. One of the last Wickes class destroyers built in the waning days of World War I, the Ward was commissioned too late to participate in the action for which it was ordered. Little is known regarding the ship's World War I days because of lack of contemporary resources. The work provides a vivid description of the Ward's service during World War II. Interviews with surviving crewmen and forewords by Kenneth C. Swedberg and Guy E. Thompson, former shipmates, are included. Other sources include information from the National Archives and the Naval Historical Center. Appendices provide Ward technical data, a chronology of major events, a listing of amphibious landings and a roster of personnel.

Free Download The US Military Profession into the 21st Century: War, Peace and Politics By Sam Sarkesian, Robert Connor
2006 | 248 Pages | ISBN: 0415358507 | PDF | 1 MB
This brand new edition of The US Military Profession into the Twenty-First Century re-examines the challenges faced by the military profession in the aftermath of the international terrorist attack on the United States on September 11, 2001. While many of the issues facing the military profession examined in the first edition remain, the 'new war' and international terrorism have compounded the challenges. The US military must respond to the changed domestic and strategic landscapes without diminishing its primary function-a function that now many see that goes beyond success on the battlefield. Not only has this complicated the problem of reconciling the military professional ethos and raison d'etre with civilian control in a democracy, it challenges traditional military professionalism. This book also studies the notion of a US military stretched thin and relying more heavily on the US Federal Reserves and National Guard. These developments make the US military profession increasingly linked to public attitudes and political perspectives. In sum, the challenge faced by the US military profession can be termed a dual dilemma. It must respond effectively to the twenty-first century strategic landscape while undergoing the revolution in military affairs and transformation. At the same time, the military profession must insure that it remains compatible with civilian cultures and the US political-social system without eroding its primary function. This is an invaluable book for allstudents with an interest in the US Military, and of strategic studies and military history in general.

Free Download The U.S. Experience with No-Fault Automobile Insurance: A Retrospective By James M. Anderson, Paul Heaton
2010 | 192 Pages | ISBN: 083304916X | PDF | 1 MB
No-fault regimes, a formerly popular alternative to the tort compensation system for auto-accident victims, have gradually lost support. Over time, premiums and claim costs have grown in no-fault states relative to other states, primarily driven by explosive medical cost increases. No-fault and tort states have also converged across many domains affecting costs, including excess claiming, litigation patterns, and noneconomic-damage payments.

Developed in response to the 1899 Hague Convention, the 37-mm gun met the restrictions on the size of weapons that could fire explosive shells, yet was also light and lethal enough to be used in battle. After World War I, in which the French Model 1916 37-mm was used extensively, several countries developed or adopted the 37-mm gun.
