Innovation Was Not Enough A History of the Midwestern Universities Research Association
Innovation Was Not Enough: A History of the Midwestern Universities Research Association (Mura) by Lawrence Jones, Frederick Mills, Andrew Sessler and Keith Symon
English | 2009 | ISBN: 9812832831 | 268 pages | PDF | 3 MB
This book presents a history of the Midwestern Universities Research Association (MURA) during its lifetime from the early 1950s to the late 1960s. MURA was responsible for a number of important contributions to the science of particle accelerators, including the invention of fixed field alternating gradient accelerators (FFAG), as well as contributions to accelerator orbit theory, radio frequency acceleration techniques, colliding beams technology, orbit instabilities, computation methods, and designs of accelerator magnets and linear accelerator cavities. A number of students were trained by MURA in accelerator techniques, and went on to important posts where they made further contributions to the field. The authors were all members of the MURA staff and themselves made many contributions to the field. No other such history exists, and there are relatively few publications devoted to the history of particle accelerators.

Industrial Work and Life An Anthropological Reader
Industrial Work and Life: An Anthropological Reader (LSE Monographs on Social Anthropology) by Massimiliano Mollona, Geert De Neve
English | December 1, 2009 | ISBN: 1847880762, 1847880746 | 480 pages | PDF | 10 MB
Industrial Work and Life: An Anthropological Reader is a comprehensive anthropological overview of industrialisation in both Western and non-Western societies. Based on contemporary and historical ethnographic material, the book unpacks the 'world of industry' in the context of the shop floor, the family, and the city, revealing the rich social and political texture underpinning economic development. It also provides a critical discussion of the assumptions that inform much of the social science literature on industrialisation and industrial 'modernity'. The reader is divided into four thematic sections, each with a clear and informative introduction: historical development of industrial capitalism; shopfloor organisation; the relationships between the workplace and the home; the teleology of industrial 'modernity' and working-class consciousness. With readings by key writers from a range of backgrounds and disciplines, Industrial Work and Life is the essential introduction to the study of industrialisation in different societies. It will appeal to students across a wide range of subjects including: anthropology, comparative sociology, social history, development studies, industrial relations and management studies. Includes essays by: E.P. Thompson, Aihwa Ong, Jonathan Parry, Thomas C. Smith, Harry Braverman, Michael Burawoy, Huw Beynon, Françoise Zonabend, James Carrier, Leslie Salzinger, Ching Kwan Lee, Ronald Dore, Tom Gill, Carla Freeman, Max Gluckman, James Ferguson, Chitra Joshi, Lisa Rofel, Geert De Neve, Karl Marx, Rajnarayan Chandavarkar, Robert Roberts, June Nash, Christena Turner.

Indian Defence Puzzles: 200 Easy Chess Opening Checkmates (Easy Puzzles) by Tim Sawyer
English | March 8, 2017 | ISBN: 152078533X | 206 pages | Rar (PDF, AZW3) | 3.95 Mb
Win fast in chess. These 200 puzzles teach you checkmates in Indian Defences after 1.d4 Nf6 such as Benko Gambit, Benoni Defence, Catalan, Queens Indian Defence, Nimzo-Indian Defence, Kings Indian Defence, and Gruenfeld Defence. How are the puzzles easy? Because every move is a check. Even the mates in two begin with a check. How are they puzzles? Because there is more than one possible check. The author's goal is for you to be faster each time you solve these typical and common early checkmates. You have 50 mates in one and 50 mates in two with each color. If you find a check that forces checkmate, then you don't need to look any further. Play the mate. You win. There are three levels of skill. First, you learn what checkmates can occur in the opening. Second, you learn to solve them correctly. Third, you learn them so well that you cannot miss them. Puzzles 1 to 100 are all White to move. White starts at the bottom of those diagrams. Puzzles 101 to 200 are all Black to move. Black starts at the bottom of those diagrams. Repeated practice makes you a winner. Go forth and win!

In the Wake of Empire Anti-Bolshevik Russia in International Affairs, 1917-1920
In the Wake of Empire: Anti-Bolshevik Russia in International Affairs, 1917-1920 by Anatol Shmelev
English | January 1st, 2021 | ISBN: 0817924248 | 472 pages | True EPUB | 15.52 MB
Even as a country ceases to be a great power, the concept of it as a great power can continue to influence decision making and policy formulation. This book explores how such a process took place in Russia from 1917 through 1920, when the Bolshevik coup of November 1917 led to the creation of two regimes: the Bolshevik "Reds" and the anti-Bolshevik "Whites."As Reds consolidated their one-party dictatorship and nursed global ambitions, Whites struggled to achieve a different vision for the future of Russia.

In Defense of Selfishness Why the Code of Self-Sacrifice is Unjust and Destructive
Peter Schwartz, "In Defense of Selfishness: Why the Code of Self-Sacrifice is Unjust and Destructive"
English | 2015 | pages: 256 | ISBN: 1137280166 | EPUB | 0,4 mb
From childhood, we're taught one central, non-controversial idea about morality: self-sacrifice is a virtue. It is universally accepted that serving the needs of others, rather than our own, is the essence of morality. To be ethical―it is believed―is to be altruistic. Questioning this belief is regarded as tantamount to questioning the self-evident.
