Mit seinen Mitarbeitern hat er als einer der Ersten durch Anwendung von Methoden der Mechanik, Aerodynamik, Thermodynamik und des Leichtbaus Grundlagen für eine wissenschaftliche Durchdringung des Kraftfahrzeuges gelegt sowie Wesentliches zur Erhöhung von Wirtschaftlichkeit, Fahrsicherheit, Fahrleistung und Zuverlässigkeit des Automobils beigetragen. Sein innovativer SHW-Wagen von 1925 gehört zu den Meisterwerken der Technik im Deutschen Museum. Neuartige Versuchstechniken, Modellversuche, die mittlerweile durch Rechnersimulation ersetzt sind, sowie Großeinrichtungen, wie das einzigartige Kraftwagen-Vollprüffeld mit seiner Kfz-Windkanalanlage, die heute noch im Einsatz ist, waren hierfür zu schaffen. Der sog. „Kammsche Kreis", die „Kammsche Regel" zur Verbesserung der Richtungsstabilität, der strömungsgünstige und seitenwindstabile K-Wagen und das K-Heck, das sich in der Form vieler moderner Pkws verbirgt, sind jedem Fachmann geläufig.Ab 1940 verdrängten wehrtechnische Aufträge zunehmend das selbstbestimmte Forschen. Der kometenhafte Aufstieg des FKFS war zweifellos durch das nationalsozialistische Programm der „Volksmotorisierung" begünstigt. Als Institutsleiter entschied sich Kamm für eine Gratwanderung zwischen Politik und Wissenschaft: Er wurde Mitglied des NSKK und der NSDAP. Das FKFS wurde „Nationalsozialistischer Musterbetrieb" und beschäftigte Fremdarbeiter. Diese Vorgänge werden ihm vorgehalten. Nach Kriegsende wurde Kamm seines Amtes an der TH enthoben.Im Rahmen des Projektes „Overcast" wurde er - wie Wernher von Braun - in die USA überführt und dort in wehrtechnische Aufgaben einbezogen. 1955 kehrte er nach Deutschland zurück und übernahm beim Battelle-Institut die Leitung der Abteilung Maschinenbau; im Ruhestand gehörte er dem Ständigen Wissenschaftlichen Beirat an. 2009 wurde Kamm posthum die ganz seltene Ehre der Aufnahme in die Automotive Hall of Fame zuteil.
