The Life, Extinction, and Rebreeding of Quagga Zebras Significance for Conservation

Peter Heywood, "The Life, Extinction, and Rebreeding of Quagga Zebras: Significance for Conservation "
English | ISBN: 1108831605 | 2022 | 242 pages | PDF | 6 MB
Quaggas were beautiful pony-sized zebras in southern Africa that had fewer stripes on their bodies and legs, and a browner body coloration than other zebras. Indigenous people hunted quaggas, portrayed them in rock art, and told stories about them. Settlers used quaggas to pull wagons and to protect livestock against predators. Taken to Europe, they were admired, exhibited, harnessed to carriages, illustrated by famous artists and written about by scientists. Excessive hunting led to quaggas' extinction in the 1880s but DNA from museum specimens showed rebreeding was feasible and now zebras resembling quaggas live in their former habitats. This rebreeding is compared with other de-extinction and rewilding ventures and its appropriateness discussed against the backdrop of conservation challenges―including those facing other zebras. In an Anthropocene of species extinction, climate change and habitat loss which organisms and habitats should be saved, and should attempts be made to restore extinct species?

The Life of Marguerite Porete A Biography of the Catholic Medieval Mystic Behind The Mirror of Simple Souls

English | ISBN: 1918509948 | 2026 | 113 pages | EPUB | 8 MB
The Life of Marguerite Porete - A Biography of the Catholic Medieval Mystic Behind The Mirror of Simple Souls by Hazel Evermore explores the life, thought, and tragic fate of one of the most controversial figures in medieval Christian history. Marguerite Porete was a medieval Catholic mystic, beguine writer, and spiritual thinker whose remarkable work The Mirror of Simple Souls became one of the most famous texts of Christian mysticism. Living in the thirteenth century in the region of Hainaut in northern France and the Low Countries, Porete belonged to the beguine movement, a network of devout lay women dedicated to prayer, contemplation, and mystical union with God. Her writings explored themes of divine love, the annihilation of the soul, and the radical freedom of the soul united with God.

The Life of Freedom in Kant and Hegel

Thomas Khurana, "The Life of Freedom in Kant and Hegel"
English | ISBN: 1009542443 | 2026 | 400 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Autonomy is one of the central aspirations of our time, yet there is a growing worry that autonomy, as we have understood and practised it, has not liberated us but subjected us to new forms of domination. In his ground-breaking reinterpretation of Kant and Hegel, Thomas Khurana reveals the source of these problems in the very concept of autonomy and develops a new understanding of human self-determination. While the dominant conception of autonomy gives rise to the paradox of self-legislation and remains caught up in a dualistic opposition of freedom and nature, we can overcome these problems by understanding freedom as a form of life. Elaborating both Kant's and Hegel's compelling concepts of life, Khurana shows that we are not autonomous despite or against our living nature, but by inhabiting it in the right way. To understand freedom, we need a critical theory of our second nature.

The Letters in the Story Narrative-Epistolary Fiction from Aphra Behn to the Victorians

Eve Tavor Bannet, "The Letters in the Story: Narrative-Epistolary Fiction from Aphra Behn to the Victorians"
English | ISBN: 131651885X | 2021 | 280 pages | PDF | 6 MB
The long tradition of mixta-genera fiction, particularly favoured by women novelists, which combined fully-transcribed letters and third-person narrative has been largely overlooked in literary criticism. Working with recognized formal conventions and typical thematic concerns, Tavor Bannet demonstrates how narrative-epistolary novels opposed the real, situated, transactional and instrumental character of letters, with their multi-lateral relationships and temporally shifting readings, to merely documentary uses of letters in history and law. Analyzing issues of reading and misreading, knowledge and ignorance, communication and credulity, this study investigates how novelists adapted familiar romance Descriptions centred on mysteries of identity to test the viability of empiricism's new culture of fact and challenge positivism's later all-pervading regime of truth. Close reading of narrative-epistolary novels by authors ranging from Aphra Behn and Charlotte Lennox to Frances Burney and Wilkie Collins tracks transgenerational debates, bringing to light both what Victorians took from their eighteenth-century forbears and what they changed.

The Last Crusade The Epic Voyages of Vasco da Gama (EPUB)

Nigel Cliff, "The Last Crusade: The Epic Voyages of Vasco da Gama"
English | ISBN: 1848870191 | 2013 | 560 pages | EPUB | 1183 KB
In 1498 a young captain named Vasco da Gama sailed from Portugal, circumnavigated Africa, crossed the Indian Ocean, and discovered the sea route to the Indies and, with it, access to the fabled wealth of the East. It was the longest voyage ever undertaken at that time. With blood-red Crusader crosses emblazoned on their sails, the explorers arrived in the heart of the Muslim East in an era when the old hostilities between Christianity and Islam had risen to a new level of intensity. In two voyages that spanned six years, da Gama would fight a running sea battle that would ultimately change the fate of three continents.
