Gender and Rurality (Routledge International Studies of Women and Place) By Lia Bryant, Barbara Pini
2010 | 207 Pages | ISBN: 0415488990 | PDF | 2 MB
The study of gender in rural spaces is still in its infancy. Thus far, there has been little exploration of the constitution of the varied and differing ways that gender is constituted in rural settings. This book will place the question of gender, rurality and difference at its center. The authors examine theoretical constructions of gender and explore the relationship between these and rural spaces. While there have been extensive debates in the feminist literature about gender and the intersection of multiple social categories, rural feminist social scientists have yet to theorize what gender means in a rural context and how gender blurs and intersects with other social categories such as sexuality, ethnicity, class and (dis)ability. This book will use empirical examples from a range of research projects undertaken by the authors as well as illustrations from work in the Australasia region, Europe, and the United States to explore gender and rurality and their relation to sexuality, ethnicity, class and (dis)ability.

Gender and Morality in Anglo-American Culture, 1650-1800 By Ruth H. Bloch
2003 | 228 Pages | ISBN: 0520234057 | PDF | 2 MB
Ruth Bloch's stellar essays on the origins of Anglo-American conceptions of gender and morality are brought together in this valuable book, which collects six of her most influential pieces in one place for the first time and includes two new essays. The volume illuminates the overarching theme of her work by addressing a basic historical question: Why did the attitudes toward gender and family relations that we now consider traditional values emerge when they did? Bloch looks deeply into eighteenth-century culture to answer this question, highlighting long-term developments in religion, intellectual history, law, and literature, showing that the eighteenth century was a time of profound transformation for women's roles as wives and mothers, for ideas about sexuality, and for notions of female moral authority. She engages topics from British moral philosophy to colonial laws regarding courtship, and from the popularity of the sentimental novel to the psychology of religious revivalism. Lucid, provocative, and wide-ranging, these eight essays bring a revisionist challenge to both women's studies and cultural studies as they ask us to reconsider the origins of the system of gender relations that has dominated American culture for two hundred years.

Gender and Allegory in Transamerican Fiction and Performance By Katherine Sugg
2008 | 260 Pages | ISBN: 0230604765 | PDF | 2 MB
By rethinking contemporary debates regarding the politics of aesthetic forms, Gender and Allegory in Transamerican Fiction and Performance explores how allegory can be used to resolve the "problem" of identity in both political theory and literary studies. Examining fiction and performance from Zo? Vald?s and Cherr?e Moraga to Def Poetry Jam and Carmelita Tropicana, Sugg suggests that the representational oscillations of allegory can reflect and illuminate the fraught dynamics of identity discourses and categories in the Americas. Using a wide array of theoretical and aesthetic sources from the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean, this book argues for the crucial and potentially transformative role of feminist cultural production in transamerican public cultures.

Gender Equality, Matrimony, and Secularism in Egypt and Iran: A Comparative Exploration of Early Twentieth-Century Family Law (Middle East Today) by Samantha Louden-Cooke
English | November 16, 2025 | ISBN: 303200845X | 183 pages | PDF, EPUB | 8.98 Mb
This book delves into the intricacies of family law in Egypt and Iran in the early twentieth century, highlighting the impact of secular models on individual rights. By understanding the effect of external power structures on the religious/secular identity of the state during this era, readers will gain an understanding of how modes of implementation and colonial engagements shaped family law. Whilst the book explores the impact of the secular nature of the state on gender quality in family law in the from 1900 to 1940, the contemporary vignettes which open the book, provide context regarding the impact of power structures, such as the state, on individual agency. The use of contemporary issues to introduce an historically focused book provides a unique way to encourage reflections upon state trajectories, the importance of external influences, and the modes of resistance which have transcended the last century. This book argues that, within the context of early twentieth century Egypt and Iran, secularism contributed towards government and civilian responses to (non) secular changes in law and society, whilst simultaneously reinforcing already existing power structures as the frameworks within which parts of society will continue to function. While family law remains firmly within a religio-legal jurisdiction, secularism did have an impact on through linguistic and cultural engagements.Bringing together intersecting factors such as gender equality, family law, colonialism, secularism and religion, it provides insights into the close-knit relationship of the public and private spheres. Moreover, it contributes empirically by focusing exclusively on two states which have, as far as the literature indicates, never been solely compared.

Gender Equality: Dimensions of Women's Equal Citizenship By Linda C. McClain, Joanna L. Grossman
2009 | 468 Pages | ISBN: 0521766478 | PDF | 4 MB
Citizenship is the common language for expressing aspirations to democratic and egalitarian ideals of inclusion, participation, and civic membership. However, there continues to be a significant gap between formal commitments to gender equality and equal citizenship - in the laws and constitutions of many countries, as well as in international human rights documents - and the reality of women's lives. This volume presents a collection of original works that examine this persisting inequality through the lens of citizenship. Distinguished scholars in law, political science, and women's studies investigate the many dimensions of women's equal citizenship, including constitutional citizenship, democratic citizenship, social citizenship, sexual and reproductive citizenship, and global citizenship. Gender Equality takes stock of the progress toward - and remaining impediments to - securing equal citizenship for women, develops strategies for pursuing that goal, and identifies new questions that will shape further inquiries.
