Biological Barriers to Cellulosic Ethanol
Free Download Ernest V. Burkheisser, "Biological Barriers to Cellulosic Ethanol "
English | ISBN: 1606922033 | 2009 | 251 pages | PDF | 17 MB
The purpose of this book is to define barriers and challenges to a rapid expansion of cellulosic-ethanol production and determine ways to speed solutions through concerted application of modern biology tools as part of a joint research agenda. Although the focus was ethanol, the science applies to additional fuels that include biodiesel and other bioproducts or coproducts having critical roles in any deployment scheme. The core barrier is cellulosic-biomass recalcitrance to processing to ethanol. Biomass is composed of nature's most ready energy source, sugars, but they are locked in a complex polymer composite exquisitely created to resist biological and chemical degradation. Key to energising a new biofuel industry based on conversion of cellulose (and hemicelluloses) to ethanol is to understand plant cell-wall chemical and physical structures - how they are synthesised and can be deconstructed. With this knowledge, innovative energy crops - plants specifically designed for industrial processing to biofuel - can be developed concurrently with new biology-based treatment and conversion methods. Recent advances in science and technological capabilities, especially those from the nascent discipline of systems biology, promise to accelerate and enhance this development. Resulting technologies will create a fundamentally new process and biorefinery paradigm that will enable an efficient and economic industry for converting plant biomass to liquid fuels. These key barriers and suggested research strategies to address them are described in this book. The core barrier is cellulosic-biomass recalcitrance to processing to ethanol. Binge Drinking in Adolescents and College Students
Free Download Cecile A. Marczinski, "Binge Drinking in Adolescents and College Students"
English | ISBN: 1606920375 | 2009 | 210 pages | PDF | 10 MB
Binge Drinking has been argued to be the number one public health hazard and the primary source of preventable morbidity and mortality for the the more than 6 million college students in the United States. Binge drinking often begins in adolescence and continues into young adulthood. Recent estimates indicate that 1 in 5 adolescents and 1 in 2 college students binge drink. Binge drinking has resulted in numerous alcohol-related tragedies, including acute alcohol poisonings, falls, and automobile collisions, and is often associated with other high-risk behaviours. This comprehensive resource contains all of the newest information that is now known about binge drinking and how this type of alcohol consumption (drinking to get drunk) differs from social drinking and chronic drinking and alcoholism. All of the recent research on this topic are included, such as the results from recent animal studies that indicate that binge drinking may be more damaging to an adolescent brain compared to an adult brain and how changes in trends in alcohol consumption (such as mixing energy drinks with alcohol) maybe be exacerbating this behaviour. finally, recent successful intervention techniques both on the individual level (eg: motivational interviewing in the emergency room) to the institutional level (e. g., programs to reduce binge drinking on college campuses) are described. This book is an excellent resource for any professional who comes in contact with the problems associated with this type of alcohol consumption.

Between Rome and Carthage Southern Italy during the Second Punic War
Free Download Michael P. Fronda, "Between Rome and Carthage: Southern Italy during the Second Punic War"
English | 2010 | pages: 403 | ISBN: 0521516943, 1107689503 | PDF | 5,2 mb
Hannibal invaded Italy with the hope of raising widespread rebellions among Rome's subordinate allies. Yet even after crushing the Roman army at Cannae, he was only partially successful. Why did some communities decide to side with Carthage and others to side with Rome? This is the fundamental question posed in this book, and consideration is given to the particular political, diplomatic, military and economic factors that influenced individual communities' decisions. Understanding their motivations reveals much, not just about the war itself, but also about Rome's relations with Italy during the prior two centuries of aggressive expansion. The book sheds new light on Roman imperialism in Italy, the nature of Roman hegemony, and the transformation of Roman Italy in the period leading up to the Social War. It is informed throughout by contemporary political science theory and archaeological evidence, and will be required reading for all historians of the Roman Republic.
