Stillwell Audio Remanence is a tape emulation plugin designed to reproduce the behavior of a complete reel-to-reel recording and playback chain. Instead of treating tape coloration as a separate effect added after processing, it models the interaction between input gain, record equalization, head magnetization, playback EQ, and gap loss as part of one continuous signal path.
The plugin provides four tape formulas with distinct tonal and saturation characteristics. 456 delivers a thicker, more saturated and noisier response, while SM900 offers a more linear and quieter character. GP9 and 499 provide intermediate options for situations where a balance between coloration and restraint is required.
Tape speed affects both the available bandwidth and the modeled equalization response. At 15 IPS, the plugin provides its reference behavior, while 7.5 IPS emphasizes the low end and introduces greater high-frequency rolloff. At 30 IPS, the response extends further into the high frequencies while reducing the noise floor.
The Bias trim provides an additional way to control high-frequency density by changing how the virtual tape heads retain high-frequency information. This makes it possible to alter the character of bright sources without relying on conventional EQ processing.
