reFX Rippler is a software synthesizer built around modal synthesis, combining resonator-based sound generation with classic subtractive synthesis. Instead of relying primarily on samples, it uses banks of resonators to create a range of tones, from pads and strings to percussive and plucked sounds.
The synthesizer combines two independent layers with flexible resonator routing, allowing sound designers to build complex timbres through parallel or serial signal paths. Bi-directional energy transfer between resonators contributes to evolving tones that respond dynamically to playing.
Rippler also provides extensive modulation capabilities. Multiple modulation sources can be assigned to parameters through a drag-and-drop system, while custom Mod Mapping response curves provide additional control over how modulation signals affect their destinations.
Software Overview
reFX Rippler combines modal and subtractive synthesis within a dual-layer architecture. Its resonator banks generate instrument-like tones without depending on conventional samples, while two oscillators and two filters provide additional subtractive synthesis capabilities. Each of the two synthesis layers can be routed independently, with support for parallel and serial resonator configurations. The resonators can exchange energy in both directions, creating continuously evolving tonal characteristics.
The modulation system allows multiple sources, including envelopes and LFOs, to control parameters. Modulation assignments can be created using drag-and-drop, and Mod Mapping can reshape modulation responses into different curves for more precise sound design.
Key Features
- Modal synthesis: Generate tones using banks of resonators rather than relying exclusively on samples.
- Subtractive synthesis: Includes two oscillators and two filters for additional sound shaping.
- Dual-layer architecture: Two independent synthesis layers for building layered sounds.
- Resonator routing: Supports parallel and serial routing configurations.
- Bi-directional energy coupling: Allows energy to transfer between resonators in both directions.
- Multiple modulation sources: Parameters can be modulated by sources such as envelopes and LFOs.
- Drag-and-drop modulation: Create modulation connections through an intuitive drag-and-drop workflow.
- Mod Mapping: Shape modulation behavior with custom response curves, including exponential, S-curved, and stepped responses.
- Modular effects chain: Provides 13 effects on the master bus and 12 effects per layer.
- Flexible effect routing: Effects can be arranged in different orders to create varied processing chains.
Why Choose reFX Rippler
Rippler is designed for sound designers and music producers who want to explore resonator-based synthesis alongside conventional subtractive techniques. Its combination of modal synthesis, flexible routing, modulation, and integrated effects provides multiple ways to shape evolving sounds. The two-layer architecture also makes it possible to combine independent synthesis structures within the same instrument, while the modular effects chains provide additional processing options for each layer and the master output.
