Description

Master the Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) protocol by combining theory with a practical, hands-on project. This course is designed for students who want to understand not only how SPI works, but also how to implement it in real hardware. You'll begin by learning the fundamentals of the SPI protocol, including clock generation, timing, chip select, data transfers, and the responsibilities of the master and slave devices. You'll also explore the different SPI modes and understand how clock polarity (CPOL) and clock phase (CPHA) affect communication.Once the theoretical concepts are covered, you'll design and implement an SPI master in VHDL on an FPGA and interface it with an Arduino acting as an SPI slave. Throughout the course, you'll learn how to write, test, and debug both the FPGA and Arduino code. As a final application, you'll build a complete hardware system where pressing a push button on the FPGA sends a command over SPI, allowing the Arduino to determine which button was pressed and display the received information.By the end of this course, you will understand the SPI protocol, the role of MOSI, MISO, SCLK, and Chip Select (CS), the four SPI modes, and how to implement an SPI master in VHDL. You'll also gain practical experience integrating FPGA and microcontroller hardware, and debugging real SPI communication, giving you the confidence to build your own SPI-based embedded systems.
