What you'll learn
Install the Claude desktop app on Mac, sign in, and open the Code tab
Choose and trust a working folder, controlling exactly what the AI can see
Point the AI at specific files by name, so vague requests stop causing wrong rewrites
Read a permission prompt and decide what to approve or decline
Switch permission modes to balance how often you're asked against how much runs on its own
Use plan mode to see the plan before any file changes, and redirect it before it starts
Write a CLAUDE.md file so project rules stop needing to be repeated every session
Check your usage and recognize the four most common causes of running through it too fast
Requirements
A Mac is required. Every screen in this course is the macOS desktop app -- Windows and Linux screens aren't covered.
A Claude account is required. This course doesn't cover creating one.
The free plan is enough to follow every exercise, but which models you can pick and how much you can use per day depends on your plan. If your screen shows a different set of options than the course, that's expected, not a bug. Work or organization-managed Macs may also have fewer permission-mode choices due to admin settings.
No programming experience, no git knowledge, and no terminal skills are required.
Description
This course contains the use of artificial intelligence.
Open the Claude desktop app, pick a folder, and ask for what you want in plain English. That's it -- three steps, and AI is reading, writing, and fixing files on your own computer.
No terminal. No black window.
We mention the terminal exists near the end, but installation, every operation, and every exercise happen entirely inside the app.
This course uses the desktop app as it exists in August 2026. Every screen is shown as a labeled diagram walking through exactly what to click and why -- so if the app's look changes after you enroll, you'll know how to find your way by what each screen does, not by memorizing where a button used to sit.
By the end of this course, you'll be able to
- Install the desktop app, sign in, and open your own folder from the Code tab
- Understand exactly what you're granting when you trust a folder -- and decide when not to
- Point the AI at the exact file you mean, instead of hoping it guesses right
- Stop a run, undo it, or start fresh, on command
- Switch permission modes to balance how often you're asked against how much runs automatically
- Use plan mode to see the plan before anything gets changed
- Write a CLAUDE.md file so you stop repeating the same instructions every session
- Read your usage screen so a spike in cost never surprises you
Who this is for
- Anyone who wants AI to write code but doesn't know where to start
- Anyone who freezes up the moment a terminal window appears
- Browser-chat users tired of the copy-paste round trip
- Non-developers who want AI to handle file organization or spreadsheets, not "real coding"
- Anyone who installed the app, saw a permission prompt, and hasn't opened it since
No prior experience needed. You just need a Mac. No programming background, no git knowledge required. Almost everything you'll type in this course is a plain-English request.
How the course is structured. Sections 1 through 3 get you installed and comfortable with the basics -- about 40 minutes. Section 4 covers permissions, which is the real fork in the road between using Claude Code confidently and being afraid of it. Section 5 covers CLAUDE.md. Section 6 is hands-on: you build a real page and fix it, then get a first look at skills, subagents, and connectors as ways to grow from here.
What this course does not cover
- Windows or Linux screens (the concepts transfer, but every screen shown here is macOS)
- Serious terminal-based workflows (mentioned as an entry point only)
- The Cowork tab (a different mode inside the same app -- named and distinguished, never opened in this course)
- Full application architecture and design
- Signing up for or managing a paid Claude plan
