The rapid growth of solar PV, battery energy storage, electric vehicles, microgrids, flexible loads, and otherDistributed Energy Resources (DERs) is transforming the traditional electrical power system. While DERs provide significant opportunities for cleaner, smarter, and more flexible energy systems, their increasing penetration also creates important challenges related tovoltage stability, power quality, renewable-energy variability, uncertainty, energy management, and coordinated control.
This course,"Advanced Coordination and Control of Distributed Energy Resources for Smart and Resilient Power Grids," provides a structured understanding of how multiple distributed resources can be coordinated to improve the reliability, efficiency, flexibility, and resilience of modern power systems.
You will begin by understanding the fundamentals of Distributed Energy Resources and their role in modern power grids and microgrids. The course then explores the challenges created by variable renewable generation, changing electrical and thermal loads, and the coupling between different energy resources.
A major focus of the course isintelligent coordination of DERs. You will learn how PV systems, battery energy storage, electric vehicles, flexible loads, thermal energy storage, and other resources can be coordinated rather than operated independently.
The course also introducesVoltage/VAR Control (VVC) and explains how conventional grid devices such as OLTCs and capacitor banks can be coordinated with fast-acting PV inverters. You will understand why different control resources should operate at different timescales and how inverter-based reactive-power control can help manage rapid voltage fluctuations caused by renewable-energy variability.
Another important area covered in the course ismicrogrid energy management. You will explore demand response, thermal flexibility, CCHP systems, thermal energy storage, and price-based demand response. These concepts demonstrate how electrical and thermal flexibility can be used to improve economic operation while maintaining customer comfort and system constraints.
