A fun, creative map-making course where learners build drawing confidence while exploring imaginative worlds.

What you'll learn

⚡ Understand key map-making skills such as symbols, paths, layouts, and navigation
⚡ Build basic drawing skills, including using shapes, adding details, and simple shading
⚡ Use imagination to design creative worlds and create a final story-based map with a clear journey
⚡ Develop fine motor skills and drawing control through step-by-step art activities

Requirements

❗ No previous map-making or geography experience is required. Learners should be able to draw simple shapes and pictures independently, but no advanced drawing skills are needed as each project is taught step by step.

Description

In this self-paced course, learners will explore the exciting world of map-making through a blend of art, imagination, and simple geography skills. The course is divided into six creative sections, including magical worlds, adventure journeys, creature habitats, extreme environments, dream worlds, and storytelling through maps!
Learners will be guided step by step to draw key elements connected to each theme. For example, in the magical world section, I will teach learners how to draw a simple potion bottle and then use their new drawing skills to create their own magical world. Along the way, they will learn important map-making concepts such as using symbols, creating paths and routes, designing layouts, matching environments to ideas, adding visual details, and building a clear visual journey from beginning to end.
Each section includes an easy-to-follow video tutorial and a hands-on creative task where learners design their own unique map. Teaching is clear, friendly, and encouraging, with step-by-step demonstrations that learners can pause, rewind, and follow at their own pace. Learners are encouraged to experiment with their ideas and make their maps as simple or detailed as they wish.
The creative activities are designed to build drawing confidence while also encouraging imagination, problem-solving, planning, and storytelling. There is no single "right" map to create, so every learner can bring their own ideas and personality to their work. They might design mysterious landscapes, exciting adventure routes, fantastical creatures, unusual environments, peaceful villages, or worlds inspired by their favourite stories.
Children are very welcome to share their finished work with me for feedback, or they can keep it private. Either way is completely fine! The teaching style focuses on creativity, confidence-building, and allowing each child to develop their own ideas, with no pressure for perfection.
By the end of the course, learners will have explored a variety of map-making techniques, developed new drawing skills, and created a collection of imaginative maps that are completely their own. Most importantly, they will have had the opportunity to discover that maps can be much more than a way of showing where places are. They can be creative worlds, adventures, stories, and a way to bring imagination to life!
For the creative assignments, learners will only need some basic art supplies, such as pencils, pens, crayons, colouring pencils, paints, or whatever materials they enjoy using. An A3 sheet of paper or other large piece of paper is ideal for creating the maps, but any size or type of paper is absolutely fine. Learners who prefer to work digitally are also very welcome to create their maps using a drawing or art program of their choice.
I hope your learner has loads of fun creating maps in this course!
