Description
Would you like to understand autism and learn practical strategies for supporting autistic children? This course introduces Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) in a clear, accessible and practical way. It is designed for parents, teachers, teaching assistants, support workers, students and anyone interested in helping autistic children develop communication, independence and everyday skills.Drawing on my professional experience supporting autistic children in a specialist school, I explain how autism can present differently in every child. Some children are verbal, semi-verbal or non-speaking, while others may experience differences in communication, social interaction, emotional regulation, sensory processing or motor skills. You will learn how behaviour can communicate an unmet need and how to observe it objectively using the ABC model: Antecedent, Behaviour and Consequence. We will explore the four common functions of behaviour—attention, access to items or activities, escape or avoidance, and sensory or automatic reinforcement. The course also introduces:• Positive and negative reinforcement• Socially mediated and automatic reinforcement• Pairing, motivation and rapport building• ABC data collection and behaviour assessment• Communication and AAC tools• Verbal behaviour, including mands, tacts, echoics and intraverbals• Intensive Trial Teaching (ITT) and Natural Environment Teaching (NET)• Prompting, errorless learning and prompt fading• Teaching acquisition targets and maintaining mastered skills• Reinforcement schedules and generalisation• Supporting emotional regulation and challenging behaviour• Working collaboratively with families and professionalsThis course does not promote a one-size-fits-all approach. Its focus is on understanding each child as an individual, identifying the reason behind behaviour and teaching meaningful replacement skills.By the end of the course, you will have a stronger foundation in autism and ABA, together with practical strategies that can be used at home, in school and in other support settings.
