Description

Professional Journalism: Reporting, Writing & Editing
How do professional journalists turn an announcement, interview, financial statement, government decision or dataset into a publishable story?
This course teaches journalism throughreal reporting practice.
Drawing on my professional reporting archive and experience — including newsroom and freelance work withReuters, BBC and Dow Jones Newswires/The Wall Street Journal Asia, alongside contributions toForbes Asia, Institutional Investor, The Banker, The Asset and other international publications — I'll take you behind the finished article and show you the reporting decisions that produce it.
This is not designed as a purely academic introduction to journalism.
Instead, we'll work throughreal professional reporting examples and newsroom methods to examine how journalists find angles, build source strategies, verify information, interpret numbers, interview sources, structure stories and edit their work for publication.

What you'll learn

You'll learn how to
- Find the real news angle rather than simply repeat an announcement
- Structure breaking and hard-news stories clearly and efficiently
- Choose precise vocabulary for fast-moving newswire reporting
- Report for international and cross-cultural audiences
- Build interviews around reporting objectives rather than generic questions
- Read corporate and financial information critically
- Interpret financial indicators rather than simply reproduce numbers
- Use primary documents, data, expert sources and interviews together
- Approach financial and valuation journalism, including real Forbes list methodology
- Trace ownership structures and avoid double counting
- Distinguish fact, allegation, forecast, interpretation and opinion
- Verify important claims before publication
- Edit reporting for accuracy, clarity, attribution and concision
- Develop stronger editorial judgment
Real journalism, not invented examples
Throughout the course, I draw on examples from my own professional journalism.
We'll examine international reporting throughBBC assignments, breaking and general news throughReuters, financial journalism throughDow Jones Newswires, and valuation and list journalism through actualForbes research methodology and working calculations.
We'll also look at longer-form business and financial reporting to understand how evidence, data, interviews and analysis work together.
The objective isn't for you to imitate my writing.
It's to understand thereporting process behind professional journalism and develop methods you can adapt to your own work.
Practical resources
The course includes downloadable worksheets designed to help you practice the reporting process yourself, including exercises in story angles, sourcing, interviewing, financial reporting, verification and editing.
You'll finish with acapstone journalism assignment in which you report and write an original, verifiable story using the methods developed throughout the course.

This course is suitable for aspiring and early-career journalists, journalism and communications students, writers moving into professional reporting, business and financial writers, editors and content professionals seeking stronger reporting skills, communications professionals who want to understand how journalists evaluate information, and working journalists interested in additional reporting formats.
