Build a working OpenVox lab on your laptop using VirtualBox — from zero to a two-node server-agent pair in one command.

What you'll learn

Spin up a complete OpenVox server-agent lab on your laptop with a single command
Understand OpenVox architecture: agent, server, certificates, Facter, and Hiera
Write and modify Puppet manifests to manage packages, services, and files
Deploy configuration changes in under 30 seconds using the quick iteration workflow

Requirements

A laptop with VirtualBox installed (macOS, Windows, or Linux). No prior Puppet or configuration management experience required.

Description

OpenVox is the community fork of Puppet, the configuration management tool that has powered production infrastructure for over 15 years. When Perforce discontinued public distribution of Puppet Open Source in late 2024, Vox Pupuli stepped up to maintain the ecosystem under the OpenVox name — and it's fully drop-in compatible with existing Puppet code, modules, and Hiera data.
This hands-on class gives you everything you need to start developing with OpenVox today. You'll build a complete two-node environment on your laptop using a single command, with no manual installation or configuration required.

What you'll learn

• Why OpenVox exists and why the community fork matters for your infrastructure
• The difference between declarative and imperative configuration management
• How the five core OpenVox components work together — Agent, Server, OpenVoxDB, Facter, and Hiera
• The agent run lifecycle: facts → catalog → apply → report
• Mutual TLS certificate security and the certificate signing workflow
• The Puppet Language: resources, dependencies, facts, and conditional logic
• How to spin up a local server-agent pair using setup_voxdev.zsh
• Quick mode for 30-second development iterations
• How to modify Puppet manifests, deploy them, and verify changes
• Where to go next with advanced patterns like roles and profiles, Hiera, and r10k
By the end of this 34-minute class, you'll have a fully functional OpenVox development environment, a working sample manifest, and the confidence to modify Puppet code and iterate at speed.
Prerequisites: A laptop with VirtualBox installed. No prior Puppet or configuration management experience required.

Who this course is for

Developers and DevOps engineers who want hands-on configuration management skills without the overhead of a full production setup. If you've heard of Puppet but never used it, or you're curious about the OpenVox community fork, this course gets you from zero to a working lab in about 30 minutes.
