/ Prerequisites** - Completion of the COBOL Masterclass course (or equivalent hands-on experience with COBOL, JCL, CICS, and DB2), since this course builds directly on those batch, CICS, and DB2 fundamentals rather than re-teaching them. - A Windows, Mac, or Linux machine capable of running GnuCOBOL and the other free tools used in the labs — no mainframe access is required or expected. - Basic familiarity with modern development concepts (APIs, version control, command-line tools) is helpful but not mandatory; each lab walks through the setup needed. - No prior cloud or DevOps experience required — the modernization strategies are taught from the ground up using the Bowling League Management System as the running example.

Mainframe systems still run the backbone of banking, insurance, retail, and government — but the people who understand them are retiring, and the pressure to modernize has never been higher. This course teaches you how to approach legacy modernization the way real enterprise teams do: strategically, not by rewriting everything from scratch.
Using a fully functional COBOL application — the Bowling League Management System — as a running case study, you'll work through six proven modernization strategies: encapsulate, refactor, rearchitect, rebuild, replace, and retire. Each strategy is explained in plain language, then applied directly to real batch, CICS, and DB2 components, so you see exactly when each approach makes sense and what it looks like in practice.
You'll learn how to wrap legacy logic as callable services, decouple tightly-bound programs, evaluate rebuild-versus-replace tradeoffs, and build a defensible modernization roadmap — skills you can bring straight into a real assessment or planning conversation. A hands-on capstone project ties it all together, giving you a portfolio-ready modernization plan of your own.
No mainframe access is required — every lab runs on your own machine. Familiarity with COBOL fundamentals (batch, CICS, DB2) is recommended; this course builds directly on that foundation and focuses on strategy, architecture, and decision-making rather than syntax.
