Description
This course contains the use of artificial intelligence.Workplace mental health is shaped not only by individual circumstances but also by how work is designed, organized, supervised, and communicated. Excessive workloads, unclear responsibilities, limited employee control, poor workplace relationships, bullying, job insecurity, and inadequate organizational support can all create psychosocial hazards. ISO 45003:2021 gives organizations structured guidance for managing these hazards within an occupational health and safety management system. It is designed to help organizations prevent work-related injury and ill health while promoting psychological health, safety, and well-being.The need for organized action is significant. The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that 59.3 million US adults, representing 23.1% of the adult population, lived with a mental illness in 2022. This figure does not mean that all mental illness is caused by work, but it demonstrates why mental health cannot be overlooked when organizations plan worker protection and support. NIOSH has also reported that close to 30% of workers often or always found their work stressful, while almost 70% said they had to work very fast. NIMH and NIOSHThis course introduces the purpose, scope, and terminology of ISO 45003:2021 and explains its relationship with ISO 45001. Learners will examine psychological health, psychosocial hazards, risk factors, worker participation, leadership responsibilities, and organizational accountability. They will explore how hazards may arise from workload, work schedules, role clarity, communication, workplace relationships, organizational culture, remote working, environmental conditions, and exposure to distressing events. The course then presents a systematic process for identifying, assessing, prioritizing, and controlling psychosocial risks.Across six modules, learners will progress from foundational concepts to risk-control planning. They will examine information sources such as worker consultation, surveys, absence records, complaints, incident reports, turnover patterns, and organizational changes. The course also covers selecting appropriate controls, assigning responsibilities, communicating actions, monitoring results, and supporting continual improvement. ISO 45003:2021 is applicable to organizations of all sizes and sectors, making its guidance relevant across offices, healthcare facilities, schools, factories, construction environments, public services, and remote workplaces.
