GRI Sustainability Reporting: A Practical Step-by-Step Guide with Charlie Manufacturing
Sustainability reporting is no longer simply about collecting ESG data and publishing a report. Organizations increasingly need to demonstrate how sustainability impacts are identified, assessed, governed, measured, managed, and communicated with credibility.
This course is designed to take you beyond the theory of theGlobal Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards and into the practical process of building a professional sustainability reporting framework.
Instead of simply explaining GRI requirements, this course follows apractical, document-driven and case-based approach usingCharlie Manufacturing as our core case study. Throughout the course, you will examine how sustainability concepts are translated into governance structures, materiality assessments, risk registers, environmental data, social metrics, and ultimately a professional sustainability report.
What makes this course different?
Many sustainability reporting courses focus primarily on explaining standards and disclosure requirements. This course takes a different approach.
You will learn through three layers
1. GRI Standards & Technical Foundation
You will understand the architecture of theGRI Universal Standards, Sector Standards, and Topic Standards, and how these standards support a structured sustainability reporting process. The course also explores the relationship between GRI andEuropean Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) and the practical implications of materiality and sustainability disclosures.
2. Real-World Corporate Benchmarks
You will examine real-world practices fromToyota Material Handling Europe (TMHE) and explore how sustainability strategy, governance, environmental management, climate action, occupational safety, and supply-chain initiatives can be translated into corporate reporting and management practices.
3. Charlie Manufacturing Case Study
Rather than starting with blank templates, you will work through completed professional-grade examples from the fictionalCharlie Manufacturing case study. You will deconstruct the logic behind governance documents, materiality assessments, risk registers, carbon calculations, social KPI documentation, and the final sustainability report.
What will you learn?
You will start by establishing the foundation of a sustainability reporting program, including organizational identity, stakeholder mapping, value-chain boundaries, reporting strategy, and the role of sustainability within the organization.
You will then move intoDouble Materiality Assessment (DMA) and stakeholder engagement. You will learn how to distinguish impact materiality from financial materiality, engage stakeholders, establish materiality thresholds, develop a materiality matrix, and determine which topics require greater attention and disclosure.
The course then exploresGRI 2 and ESG Governance, including board oversight, sustainability committees, executive accountability, governance structures, and the role of management in turning sustainability commitments into measurable actions.
You will also learn how to integrate ESG considerations intoEnterprise Risk Management (ERM) through risk assessment, the Three Lines of Defense model, business conduct, anti-corruption, anti-competitive behavior, whistleblower protection, and ESG risk registers.
The environmental modules provide practical insight intoISO 14001, ISO 50001, resource use, waste, circular economy, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), and environmental data management. You will explore GRI 301 and GRI 306 and examine how organizations can move from conventional environmental compliance toward more systematic environmental management.
The climate modules then take you intoScope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions, including stationary and mobile combustion, purchased electricity, location-based and market-based Scope 2 reporting, fugitive emissions, renewable electricity procurement, supplier emissions, and value-chain decarbonization.
You will also exploreScience Based Targets initiative (SBTi) target-setting concepts, supplier carbon maturity, and the development of a Net Zero transition roadmap.
The social dimension of the course includesGRI 403 Occupational Health & Safety, worker participation, incident reporting, andRoot Cause Analysis (RCA). You will also explore Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, gender equality, unconscious bias, supplier social due diligence, and the prevention of child and forced labor within the value chain.
Finally, the course brings everything together through the preparation of aGRI Content Index and final Sustainability Report. You will learn how to cross-reference disclosures, structure the report, improve readability and accessibility, conduct editorial review, and prepare the report for internal verification and board-level sign-off. External audit and assurance are outside the scope of this course.
