Only by their persistence did they dictate his words, already misunderstood by lack of experience and perceptual awareness. Rev. Devan re-interprets this text not by the written word but by communication with Laozi himself. Often the word "Tao" is interpreted to mean the "way" which through direct translation is correct, however, the intention of the word in which Laozi did not have a word for is "Purpose".
