Stacked stones or rock cairns are human made formations found in many cultures, all over the globe. They are a physically striking, a mix of architecture and found materials, and serve many purposes. They can be landmarks or memorials, trail markers or simply ornamental in value. And one of the beautiful things about them, is that they are made from whatever stones are available in that area. Today's class demonstrates two methods of creating watercolor stacked stone images: Artistic & Realistic. The Artistic Painting demonstrates a method of painting a tower of coordinated rocks with an artistic flair. There's an element of whimsy and abstraction to this painting. Alternatively, the Realistic Painting offers 5 lessons for painting textures based on rocks: Basalt, Graphite, Sandstone, Lava, & Travertine. In both paintings, we'll sketch an intriguing formation that explores the appearance of the simple and humble stone.
