About this course
In this course, I'll take you through the essentials of PE. This course is designed to give a thorough tour through the fundamentals of private equity, the basic structures and functions of private equity firms, the different strategies, the deal and investment process and the essentials of modelling private equity deals. Throughout the course, I'll use practical examples to help bolster your understanding. There will also be a deep dive into the LBO process.

This course will be split into 2 core parts:​​
Private Equity Introduction: I'll provide a primer on private equity, we'll discuss what private equity is, the typical PE fund lifecycle and investment process, the structure of PE funds, the different types of PE investment strategies and an overview of the PE Market.
Leveraged Buyouts Investment Process: We'll zoom in on the leveraged buyout. Here, I will discuss the specifics on the the most common and recognisable PE investment sub-field - the Leveraged Buyout or (LBO) process, the different sources PE firms generate high returns from investments, what makes a good LBO target, LBO deal capital structures, the different exit strategies. I aim to make this content as practical, useful and interesting as possible, so we'll also be constructing our own LBO Model in excel - valuing an LBO deal. I find constructing the valuation of private equity transactions the most interesting and it will help bolster your understanding of the mechanics of how these investments make money. Recounting this process is very common in PE interviews and even investment banking interviews.
A bit about myself
I currently work as an analyst at JP Morgan and have previously worked as a buy-side Investment Analyst at a highly regarded diversified equity fund manager. I also have experience at notable firms including Deloitte and Grant Thornton, as well as an industry-leading and fast-growing tech company headquartered in San Francisco.
I am going to do my best to make the content easy to understand but also thorough, that way you know how to apply this knowledge in the future. So I hope you find it interesting and I'm excited to begin this Private Equity journey with you.

Project Guide
In this class, students can learn how to build a leveraged buyout financial model.
Students can follow along to build their own LBO financial model in Excel and apply the learnings from the course, including
Determining Purchase Price Assumptions: Purchase multiple, capital structure, interest rate etc.
Create Sources and Uses lists: "Sources" lists how the transaction will be financed (debt + equity) and "Uses" lists the capital's uses
Financial Projections for P&L, Cash Flow and Balance Sheet: Project out financial statements ( 5 years) and determine how much debt is paid down yearly
Exit: Calculate the exit value based on EV/EBITDA multiple and then subtract net debt to get the exit equity value
Calculate the Internal Rate of Return (IRR) and money-on-money multiple (MoM)
Perform Sensitivity analysis analysing the impact of changes in the exit multiple and leverage on IRR.
The Excel file used in the class is attached in the project resources, which can be used as a guide to supplement the class lessons. The project is to create your own LBO financial model using the concepts learnt in the course. Select your own assumptions and see how this impacts returns. The class will expose students to a variety of finance and valuation concepts that will enable them to understand private equity transactions and create an LBO financial model in excel.
